This book was short, definitely just scratched the surface. It did make me want to get some more books and learn more about the Appalachian folklore and ways. Definitely worth a read. 😉
Sweeping generalizations (“Friday the 13th started in Appalachia”, um no, incorrect) and spelling errors (where the heck is North Caroline?) make for complete drivel in book form. None of her sources are annotated, so you know they’re most likely less than accurate (and no, the “references” section in the back doesn’t count).
Don’t waste your time or, if you’re not a KU subscriber, your money either.
This was interesting to read and learn about mountain magic and spells used in the Appalachian mountain area. I enjoyed reading the folklore section the most followed by the moon phases and the practices. It is a very beginner book so the explanations are easy to understand and well thought out.
Extremely interesting book I just wished a few different spells would have been added on cfc the side. It was very intriguing to read about different believes.
Interesting and informative. The explanation of story behind the objects or reasoning for doing the spell was brief and interesting. There was not too much detail just how the region uses or believes in the magic of the object .
Needed citations/footnotes, information about the author (why should you be trusted as a source?), & at least one more editing pass. From what I know already the information isn’t totally off kilter, but at the same time the references are few & mostly websites.
It’s a history book not a spell book. It’s great for learning history and context but not much for reading through spells or recipes to draw inspiration from bc there aren’t any listed
