Single mom, mid-40s, ends up with a delusional and dangerous stalker after meeting him on a dating app. Definitely doesn’t shed a single positive light on dating apps.
Pros: older MCs, some MacGuyver-style antics to escape a kidnapping
Cons: sadly, so many more than positives.
It’s based in Charlotte, but you could find/replace with any town anywhere and you’d have no problems. No landmarks, no local color at all. Matter of fact, the southern turns of phrase used throughout the book aren’t terms I’ve ever heard before. As a long-time native to 20 miles NW of Charlotte, it’s hard to put this aside. At one point, the story moves to the Smokey Mountains. Yes, they’re partially in NC, but it’s not what we’re known for. The Blue Ridge Mountains would’ve been a better local choice.
Now, the FMC. Love her focus on her group of close friends, love how fiercely independent she was. But, lord woman, you have a dangerous, delusional stalker who you’ve found out goes by an alias and knows everything about you without you telling him. Yet you STILL want to stay alone in your house? Without a weapon or any other way of defending yourself? BE FOR REAL. Usually they’re TSTL when they’re younger, but Jessica really teeters on the line as a grown ass woman in her 40s. When the MMC makes a huge confession to her, she literally freaks out and gets angry that he lied to her for 20+ years. No bitch, he just didn’t think it was worth losing a friendship and making it awkward since you’re besties with his sister by telling you he’s been in love with you since high school. There’s clearly chemistry and attraction, why are you so put out by the omission? She also decides sitting at the end of a lake dock at night in a cast and on crutches is a good idea when her stalker hasn’t been found yet. Choices, she makes some questionable ones.
I won’t ruin the final chapter, but I rolled my eyes.
Tropes: best friend’s brother, stalker & kidnapping, single mom
