வரலாற்றைப் பின்னணியாக வைத்துப் பல கட்டுரைகளும் சிறுகதை களும் எழுதியவர் தி.நா. சுப்பிரமணியம். ஒருமுறை அவரிடம் நான் சரித்திரக் கதைகள் எழுத ஆசைப்படுவதாகச் சொன்னபோது, 'வெள்ளைக்காரன் சென்னையில் குடியேறிய காலம் ரொம்பச் சுவாரஸ்யமானது. அதற்கான தகவல்களும் வண்டி வண்டியாகக் கன்னிமரா லைப்ரரியில் கிடைக்கும். அதை வைத்து எழுது' என்றார்.

சென்னை கார்ப்பரேஷனின் மூன்றாவது நூற்றாண்டையொட்டி ஒரு சிறப்பு மலர் வெளியிடப்பட்டிருந்தது. அதில் ஒரு கட்டுரையில், சென்னை நகரில் அடிமை வியாபாரம் நடந்ததாக ஒரு கட்டுரை படித்தேன்.

எம்.எஸ். சுப்பிரமணிய ஐயர் என்பவர் அந்த நாளில் சின்னச் சின்ன வாக்கியங்களில் விறுவிறுப்பாகக் கதை கட்டுரைகள் எழுதி வந்தார்.

About the author

ரங்கராஜன் 5-10-1927-இல் கும்பகோணத்தில் பிறந்தார். இவரது தந்தை மகாமகோபாத்தியாய ஆர். வி. கிருஷ்ணமாச்சாரியார் ஒரு சமசுகிருதப் பண்டிதர். ரங்கராஜன் தன் 16-ஆம் வயதில் எழுத ஆரம்பித்தார். 1946-இல் ‘சக்தி’ மாத இதழிலும் ‘காலச்சக்கரம்’ என்ற வார இதழிலும் உதவி ஆசிரியராகத் தொடர்ந்தார். 1950-இல் குமுதம் நிறுவனம் சிறிது காலம் நடத்திய ‘ஜிங்லி’ என்ற சிறுவர் இதழில் சேர்ந்து, 42 ஆண்டுகள் குமுதம் இதழில் ஆசிரியர் குழுவில் பணியாற்றினார்.
இவர் பல புனைப்பெயர்களில் எழுதியுள்ளார். சூர்யா, ஹம்சா, துரைசாமி, கிருஷ்ணகுமார், மாலதி, முள்றி, அவிட்டம்,வினோத் ஆகியவை அவற்றுள் சில. 'நான் கிருஷ்ணதேவராயன்' இவரது குறிப்பிடத்தக்க வரலாற்றுப் புதினம். ஹென்றி ஷாரியரின் பாப்பிலான் (பட்டாம்பூச்சி), சிட்னி ஷெல்டனின் இஃப் டுமாரோ கம்ஸ் (தாரகை), தி ஸ்டார்ஸ் ஷைன் டவுன் (லாரா) மற்றும் ரேஜ் ஆஃப் ஏஞ்சலஸ் (ஜெனிஃபர்); ஜெஃபிரே ஆர்ச்சரின் எ டுவிஸ்ட் இன் தி டேல் (டுவிஸ்ட் கதைகள்) டேனியேல் ஸ்டீலின் காதல் மேல் ஆணை ஆகியவை இவரது குறிப்பிடத்தக்க மொழிபெயர்ப்புகள். கிருஷ்ணகுமார் என்ற பெயரில் அமானுட கதைகளும் டி. துரைசாமி என்ற பெயரில் உண்மைக் குற்றங்களின் அடிப்படையில் குற்றக் கதைகள், வினோத் என்ற பெயரில் தமிழ்த் திரைப்பட செய்திக் கட்டுரைகள் (லைட்ஸ் ஆன் வினோத்) என பலவித படைப்புகளை எழுதியுள்ளார்.
இவர் 1500-க்கும் மேற்பட்ட கதைகளையும் , 50 நாவல்களும், ஏராளமான கட்டுரைகளும், மொழிபெயர்ப்பு நாவல்களும் எழுதியுள்ளார். இவற்றுள் பல குமுதம் ஆனந்த விகடன் முதலான இதழ்களில் தொடர்களாக வெளிவந்தன. இவருடைய மூன்று நாவல்கள் திரைப்படங்களாக வெளிவந்தன. பல படைப்புகள் சின்னத் திரையிலும் இடம் பெற்றுள்ளன. ரங்கராஜன் அண்ணா நகர் டைம்ஸ் பத்திரிக்கையில் எழுதிய கட்டுரைத்தொடர்களில் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்டவை “நாலு மூலை” என்ற பெயரில் நூலாக வெளியாகியுள்ளன. ”அவன்” என்ற பெயரில் தன் வரலாற்றையும் எழுதியுள்ளார். இளம் எழுத்தாளர்களுக்குக் கதை எழுதும் நுணுக்கங்களைக் கற்றுத் தரும் எப்படிக் கதை எழுதுவது? என்ற வகுப்பினையும் தான் ஒருவராகவே நடத்தி வந்தார்.

This the first time I have completed a book of 400 odd pages in just a day of started reading. Quite an achievement for me 😬.

The slave’s Love is a novel written by Ra Ki Rangarajan famous for his work on the great Vijayanagara King Sri Krishnadevaraya though I’m yet to read it. Picked up this book as the title attracted me and the blurb mentions about the slavery in the white colonial period.

Story takes you back to the 1600-1700’s cruel turruka Aurangzeb was on his throne in Delhi. Brits had just set foot into Bharat as travellers and in the guise of business they were already showing their true colours & were involved in a deadly slavery trade just like they were doing it across the world.
Elihu Yale ( Yale University is named after him) as per white standards anyone who have been a pice of shit in the east would be called as philosophers and philanthropists.
He is said to have been in slave trade also had passed a rule to at least 10 slaves to be boarded for Europe from Madras. Whipping, branding, families torn apart shipped to foreign countries they faced all sort of discrimination.

This particular story is about a slave woman being rescued by a guy(protagonist )from a small town of Kanchipuram has just left for Chennai for a better life just like the modern gen is doing.
So what happened next. Did both of them survive or were caught again? She has a flashback happens to be a daughter of a king of Singavaram. How did she become a slave.Did she go back to singavaram was she made queen?Author takes you on adventurous ride on the Eastern part of
TamilNadu.

Story would have been more interesting if it had the details & process on how slavery trade was cross the world at that point rather than a flimsy story.

Good thing is there are lot of historical references though many incidents have happened but not at the time this story takes place.
He could have just gone in a chronological timeline to bring in the original story.
Author tries to make the Protagonist as a guy who can evade any sort of threats at first it was fun and later become more flimsy just like any given Tamil movie hero will be. Since I have liked this book will read long pending read of Arun Krishnan’s book and Kalki’s famous novels.

Translation is good at places she uses the misspelt names in modern times. Apart from a few inaccuracies story is enjoyable and interesting.

Adimayin Kadhal (Roughly translated as Slave's Love) by R.K. Rangarajan is a Historical Fiction Novel set in Madras Presidency during the rise of East India Company to power.

It is also the period when people from surrounding rural areas migrated to Madras with the hope of new beginnings but eventually ended up being a commodity in slave trade.

The Author has described the protagonist as an extremely optimistic and efficient guy who can make use of any kind of situation to his favour or creates such situation himself!

Even though this quality sounds fun in the beginning it gets tiring as the story progress since we can predict the outcome ourselves!

The story starts as and when our Hero leaves his comfortable laid back life in search of some adventures in Madras. Soon he gets mixed up in the city's affair.

Under some extraordinary situation he helps a slave girl to escape her lifetime captors. Thereafter finds himself tied to her destiny. He tries to be at her side no matter what.

There branches out another parallel story happening simultaneously in a faraway kingdom, where the King out of blue orders to find his long lost Brother's Daughter.

Soon after, the love story turns to Political Drama involving The Hero, Slave Girl, The King and Royal Family, Britishers and some Landlord who aims for easy money and influential position.

The entire storyline is nothing but How the hero saves the day as well as his girl! This is a typical Hero based story with some interesting Historical take by the end of the day. I rated is 3 ⭐ and it's an okayish read!

பிக் பாஸ் நிகழ்ச்சியில் கமல் ஹாசன் அவர்கள் செய்த பரிந்துரையின் பேரில் இந்த புத்தகத்தை படித்தேன், பார்த்தால் முன்னுரையும் அவரே எழுதியுள்ளார். முதல் நூறு பக்கங்கள் மிக செயற்கையாகவே தோற்றமளித்தன ஆனால் அதற்கு பிறகு புத்தகத்தை கீழே வைக்க முடியாதபடி அருமையாக சென்றது கதை. சாதாரண நிகழ்வு ஒன்று பெரும்பயனை தருவதுவாய் மாறுகின்றது, கதை முழுதிலும் அப்படிப்பட்ட நிகழ்வுகள் படிக்க நன்றாகவே உள்ளன.
இந்தக் கதையிலும் இலவசங்களை கொடுத்து மக்களை ஏமாற்றுகிறார்கள் ஆட்சியாளர்கள் !

The Slave’s Love by Ra. Ki. Rangarajan is another good literature. I had previously read his I, KrishnaDevaraaya. It was brilliant. Sadly our history doesn't tell us about slave trade that happened in India. We tend to ignore that particular section of history which needs to be told out loud. After the removal of the slave trade we then had indentured. The story is from the British Raj from Madras state. It's a love story. The protagonist wants to free his love from rivals clutches. Circumstance is very well narrated. It keeps you hooked.

What prompted me to buy this book?
The name Elihu Yale. He founded Yale University. He earned alot through slave trade in India. Yale University was founded with money looted from India. Elihu Yale was a clerk in the East India Company's Madras office. He amassed so much wealth through corruption, slave trade and loot that the British fired him. The Collegiate School of Connecticut requested Yale for funds to avert insolvency. Yale agreed and they named the college after him. This wasn't mentioned in this book. It disappointed me.

It is a historical novel with a smart protagonist who can handle any extreme situations with his smartness and perseverance. The book failed to paint the picture of the era In which the story happens, didn’t provide the historical events or any specific details for the reader to justify the genre.

I would not recommend this book.
