A true story of manipulation and abuse. Ella James is now a young, successful professional, married with children. But her teenage years were anything but easy. Shortly before she turned 13, the author’s life changed forever when her family moved to the closed Centrepoint Community. Centrepoint was promoted as a place of peace and beauty but gradually it became known that it was rife with child abuse, drug manufacturing and usage. During her four years there she was pressured and manipulated into inappropriate and at times frightening situations by many of its adult members including its counsellors. Free sexuality under the influence of drugs was strongly encouraged, including between different age groups, and to resist was actively discouraged. For four years there was no escape.
A gut churning read. I lived there 1981-85 (never became a member, I was tolerated because of being in partnership with a member) and can attest that everything Ella James described is true. Bert was a charismatic monster, as all these cult leaders are. Be warned...
A difficult read but topical after the recent documentary on Centrepoint and the evil sexual predator Bert Potter. The adults made choices but the children were victims and weren’t listening to or protected by those that should have cared for them.
