McCoy and his bunch of outlaws kill Jess's old friend River Bend Bill and a few other townsfolk before the raid is over. They also trample Judge McBride's wife to death on their way out of Timber.

Sheriff Steele wants Jess to hunt down McCoy and his men and bring them to justice in the most severe way. Jess sets out on a long ride to hunt down every one of them. He is faced with several setbacks, but his dogged determination to get the men responsible drives him on, never giving up and never backing down.

Twenty five books into the series. Williams does a pretty good job of making the bad guys really despicable, however.
