What would today’s world look like if teens embraced love as the gospel defines it? How would it affect the future of our families, our society?
Answering that question is the life mission of Clayton King—a pastor and professor born to an unwed fifteen-year-old girl. King sets out to prove that there is a better way, a way that is more pure, more satisfying, and more fulfilling than any “love” that society is selling. He offers teens a mirror that allows them to reflect God through their relationships and the tools to fight for the redeemed purity offered by the sacrifice of Christ.
With the presentation of biblical relationships, scientific facts, and faith-building Scripture, the True Love Project is a call to embrace the true love that God has intended for us all.
This was a absolutely wonderful book! I am 24 and married with a daughter but this was still a great read and a wonderful way to learn more about Jesus and how He feels towards us. Desiring holiness and purity never stops!
In “True Love Project,” Clayton and Sharie King provide great wisdom and insight when it comes to how young people can maintain their purity in contrast to the messages of the world. They rightly point out that the myriad of images and stories produced by our modern media landscape offer a message that is contrary to Scripture. Then they deftly share Biblical wisdom in order to help young people understand God’s standard for His gift of sexuality. Following this, they do a beautiful job of exploring recent scientific discovery regarding the bonding mechanisms built into humanity that encourage monogamy. One of the strongest aspect of this text is the challenge offered to students to make Jesus Lord of their lives. As the authors point out, our culture has made sexuality and many other things Lord. Our first step to committing to purity is to commit to Christ. The accompanying 40 Days studies for both guys and girls offer additional practical tools so that students might apply the wisdom of Scripture to their commitment to purity. Both products offer additional insight for young people as they accept the gift of sexuality from God and seek to honor that gift within God’s created purpose. The only weakness in the text comes from the discussion based around direction and destination. In this chapter, the authors infer that if a person is faithful, God will reward them with a spouse. Unfortunately, this is not always true. The authors probably do not intend to preach this false message, but some readers may feel discouraged if God never provides that spouse. Nevertheless, I would encourage youth leaders to use this product. The savvy youth leader will find many uses for “True Love Project.” Small group discussions around this text would work very well. Also, providing youth with the 40 Days of Purity resources would be largely beneficial as students could learn to keep each other accountable during those 40 days. Overall, this product offers much to the youth leader seeking to challenge Christian young people toward Biblical purity when it comes to sexuality.
What I loved about this book was that it based purity on our acceptance of what Christ did for us upon the Cross. It is Christ's purity, not our own that makes us pure. Another good thing about this book is a good look at how to view sex in a church culture that avoids the topic altogether. The only drawback was the fact that it repeated itself in different chapters, and gave a good ideological view of what purity looks like, but not a pragmatic view on how this was truly lived out. Hence, 4 not 5 stars in my view.
