I was listening to Pastor Will Weedon's podcast "The Word of the Lord Endures Forever" and in one of the episodes, he quotes a bit from one of these essays. I hadn't ever heard of O.P. Kretzmann and the words were beautiful, so I went on a Google foray to learn more about The Pilgrim which led to a purchase. A purchase I will never regret.
There are thirty-three essays in this little volume and I decided to pace myself and read one a night, giving each its own opportunity to soak in and be savored. If ever a book was balm to my soul, this was it. You can do your own deep dive on who Kretzmann was and where his writing was originally published, but suffice to say he was a man of deep faith, as was evidenced by the content -- if you aren't prepared to explore some resounding truths about God, you'll want to pass this one over -- and he was blessed with the gift of language.
This book is an absolute treasure, which is repeating myself but there is no other words I can think of to accurately praise it. It isn't in print anymore, I don't believe, so you will have to find it used somewhere to read it (I've already purchased two more copies I found of it that will be gifted to one of my best friends and to my Pastor), but it will be worth it, if you love poignant writing on God and faith. I was so sad when it ended, I nearly started it a second time on the spot. This is a book I will for absolute certain pick up again and again.
