Her mission in life is to warn women of all the notorious rakes in the haut ton.
His mission in life is not to be a rake. Which should be easy, since he’s not one.
After Lady Felicity has been nearly compromised too many times, she receives an anonymous letter cautioning her about Evan Ashbourne. Using a pen name, she writes for a prevalent scandal sheet to ensure Evan cannot ruin any naive women.
Evan Ashbourne is the grumpy, overworked brother who just needs a break. Especially from all the rumors circulating about his nonexistent rakish ways. It’s the perfect time for a three legged race. When Felicity gets tied to his ankle and mistakes him for his twin brother, shenanigans ensue.
Can enough shenanigans lead to love? And when secrets are finally revealed, will the truth destroy the connection or build a solid foundation for their future?
This is the fifth book in the steamy new regency series, The Ashbourne Legacy, that follows the seven mislabeled brothers of Snow White.
Read this novelette if you like sweet and spicy easy reads with witty banter and lovable characters.

Overall: 3.5 rounded to ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Readability: 📖📖📖📖 Feels: 🦋🦋🦋 Emotional Depth: 💔💔 Sexual Tension: ⚡⚡⚡ Romance: 💞💞💞 Sensuality: 💋💋💋 Sex Scene Length: 🍑🍑🍑 Steam Scale (Number of Sex Scenes): 🔥 Humor: Yes Perspective: Third person from both the hero and heroine More character focused or plot focused? character How did the speed of the story feel? Should I read in order? It’s not totally necessary but you’ll have a bit better character background for the family if you do (and they are short so not a huge commitment). Also the last book takes place during the house party vibes of this one so that might be nice to read first.
Basic plot: Felicity receives an anonymous letter about what a rake Evan Ashbourne is and is determined to take him down in the scandal sheet she writes.
Give this a try if you want: - Regency time period – 1816 - house party - races - twins / touch of secret identity (heroine think the hero is his twin brother for part of the story) - bit of enemies to lovers feel (the heroine dislikes the hero immensely) - pillow fight - average short story length – 1 full scene
Ages: - Didn’t see them mentioned
First line: Once a rake, always a rake.
My thoughts: This is another pleasant and quick read in the Ashbourne series! These are short, so it’s hard to get a good background on the characters and I found myself struggling with this one a bit – probably because I was into the heroine being a gossip columnist writer and the hero being her target and the hero’s secret night time occupation. I do think the heroine’s turn around was quite abrubt and because of that it wasn’t as believable to me as it might have been in a longer book.
Overall though this is a really sweet story with some fun house party scenes, like races (can we get more of that in HR?? There’s something SO CUTE about racing against a man giggling like mad…) and a twin mix up. Very fun!

Full break down on what my ratings above mean here: Overall: How I felt about it everything considered! Readability: How ‘readable’ was the book? Did I fly through it? Did I have to tell myself to pick it back up repeatedly? Were any passages confusing? (I will probably score like (1) is literally unreadable due to formatting/typing errors, etc (2) There were lots of errors that made it difficult to read OR It was extremely confusing and I had to reread passages to make sense of it OR I disliked it so much I had to bribe myself to keep reading (3) I didn’t really want to keep reading and would have preferred to abandon the read and start something else OR some minor continuity issues/confusion (4) I liked it fine, maybe a minor error or 2. I was happy to pick it up when I had time. (5) I never wanted to put this down. I thought about it when I wasn’t reading it. I hid in the bathroom from my kids to read. I threw inappropriate food at my children for dinner so I could read instead.) Feels: Totally subjective to each person but did the book give me any tingles? Any butterflies? Did it rip my heart out (in a good way?) Emotional depth: How well do I feel I know the characters at the end? How much did I feel their emotions throughout the story? Sexual tension: Again, subjective, but how strong was the wanting and longing to me between the characters? A book might have strong sexual tension without a single touch. Romance: Was there romance? Did romantic things happen? This can be actions/words/thoughts of the characters and again is subjective. Sensuality: This is how the intimate scenes are written. Kisses and sexual scenes – how sensual were they? Were they on the mechanical side? Was there emotional pull tied in? Were the details explicit or flowery? These are subjective but generally (1) too short to get a good judgement (2) not all what I'm looking for - very vague or flowery prose (3) either not explicit enough or not enough emotional pull (too mechanical/physically descriptive without the emotions) (4) what I love in a scene (5) absolute perfection - perfect balance of emotional longing and explicit descriptions Sex Scene Length: How long the bedroom scenes are (generally (1) is 1-3 sentences (2) is a few paragraphs to a page-ish (3) is about average, a few pages (4) more well developed scenes, quite a few pages with descriptions (4) the majority of the book takes place in the bedroom. This is always hard to tell for me on audio! Steam Scale: Generally, each flame is a scene. If scenes are super close together I sometimes combine them. If a scene is super short or so vague I don’t know what’s happening, I don’t count it. There’s some levels of grey but generally the number of flames is how many sex scenes there are (I max out at 5 so I’ll put a + after if there’s more than that)
"The Rake and the Writer" by Eliana Piers, book five of the Ashbourne Legacy series . Cover: 4/5 Story: 4.5/5 Steam (novelette): 🔥 Ending: HEA . Series or Stand Alone: Series or Stand Alone: You could read this as a stand alone, but I enjoy Piers's writing the most when read in series order as there can be cross-over. . England, Regency (1816) Grumpy Rakish Gentleman Secret Gossip Columnist Sister's Best Friend Grumpy/Sunshine House Party Twin Mix Up Enemies to Lovers Fairytale Adjacted Meddling Family . Eliana Piers has a more contemporary tone that would appeal greatly to a reader looking to dive into HRs along with long-time readers looking for a sweet, spicy, and lightly humorous read. This has been my favorite read of the series so far.
This had a great build-up of both characters realizing they had feelings for each other for a long time in a realistic way. I enjoy how Piers's main characters often have a great purpose in life outside of being a part of the ton. This title also offers up a great deal of insight into what the characters are thinking which I always appreciate. I have also been enjoying the ongoing festivities of the house party shenanigans along with the playful pillow fight in this book.
As for steam, Piers utilizes a combination of mostly explicit and alluded-to terms in her scenes. The scene in this novelette flowed very naturally with the progression of the story. I found this novellette to be the spiciest, while remaining sweet, in the series so far. Piers always has very clear lines of consent in her writing. . Read as an self-purchased ebook. The Rake and the Writer. My fellow readers. Can I get a woo hoo for Felicity and Lord Evan? Readers I am totally over the moon with this new love couple. I had so much fun reading and getting to know these two individuals. If you absolutely go sqee over short stories with totally adorable main characters, then Felicity and Evan are the it characters for you. My favorite part is how Hope, (Evan’s sister) slipped on the jacket without Evan being the wiser. Clearly a certain person was a foot about something. Do you think that it was to late before Evan could figured out Hopes shenanigans? Felicity’s character is fresh and charming. To a certain person, she’s the most beautiful thing with a smile. Now Evan, his character walked around the family home like a brute. Could this be about some things that he may have said or did? You know how the Beau-monde are with their rumors. With Evan’s twin Felix passing through rooms and wooing the beautiful young ladies in the family home and Hope acting very odd. Evan thinks he’s in one heck of a weird dream. Well do not fear Felicity is near. A favorite children’s bedtime ritual brings two people together so beautifully. I feel it’s one of the best parts written in the story. Readers, I could feel the deep emotions through the characters dialogue and the affection that they have towards each other. It seemed so real. Through these scenes you can really connect with the characters. This maybe one of my most memorable stories from this author. The plot and the subplot is absolutely marvelous. I give this book two snaps and a, I have my eye on you Mavis. Hope isn’t the only one sneaking around. Until next time my fellow readers. Read on!
Especially from all the rumours circulating about his nonexistent rakish ways. It’s the perfect time for a three legged race. When Felicity gets tied to his ankle and mistakes him for his twin brother, shenanigans ensue. The fifth Ashbourne sibling to find love, Felicity is friends with Evan’s twin Felix but when Hope Ashbourne tricks Evan into wearing Felix’s jacket sparks fly between Evan & Felicity. A quick delicious read with mistaken identity, sizzling chemistry & false assumptions. I really liked both Evan & Felicity & read their charming romance in a sitting & loved grumpy Evan smiling & Felicity realising her true feelings My review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
This is the fifth book in the Ashbourne series and it kept me entertained and smiling. Another Ashbourne brother finds love and of course it wasn’t smooth sailing, there were misunderstandings, mistaken identity, secrets, humor and steamy romantic encounters.
Lady Felicity has experienced what a Rake can do to a lady’s reputation and her mission is to warn young ladies of the ton. As a writer for one of the gossip sheets she takes her responsibility seriously and when she receives an anonymous letter about her friend Hope’s brother Lord Evan being a rake she makes sure to spread the word.
Felicity is good friends with Felix who is Evan’s twin and when she pairs with Evan who is wearing Felix’s jacket they have a great time. For some reason, she finds herself reacting differently when Felix touches her and she is confused by this reaction. I did find it amusing that she could be such good friends with Felix and dislike Evan as much as she did since they were twins.
A fun filled pillow fight finds her realizing that it is Evan not Felix she has been enjoying herself with and she starts to see him differently. When Felicity overhears that Evan actually is helping children at the local orphanage and not out at night behaving rakishly she realizes she was mistaken about him.
She confesses to Evan that she has been writing about him and he tells her about his work at the orphanage. Once all misunderstandings are cleared up, Evan tells her he loves her and she does the same. Although, their affection for each other seemed to happen quickly it was written beautifully and very believable.
I can’t wait to see what humorous situation Eliana Piers has in store for the next Ashbourne brother. I received an ARC copy of the book from the author, and I am leaving this review voluntarily, all thought and opinions are my own.
I have loved all the books in this series, but this one is my new favorite! Lady Felicity has had very bad experiences with rakes trying to comprise her so they can get their hands on her wealth. As a writer for one of the gossip sheets she feels it is her duty to caution the young ladies of the ton. After receiving an anonymous letter telling her how bad her friend Hopes brother, Evan is she knows what she must do. It’s tricky as she is best friends with his twin, Felix. The only way to tell them apart is a small mole behind his ear. Evan can’t believe he is being called a rake and the worst in the scandal’s sheets! He is the most un raked like of all his brothers, and he has six! He is bright, trustworthy and dependable just like his oldest brother. Evan has always been attracted to Felicity. When his sister and brother make him take part in the games at their house party, he is paired with her. Oh, my now the fun begins as Felicity mistakes him for Felix! She can't understand her mixed feelings now after all this time. What surprises await these two secrets and misunderstanding come out making both rethink what they thought of the other. You will laugh out loud, and sigh at the ending. Other books in this series not to be missed. All the books can be read as standalone but so so much better read in order. As they are short books so are great for reading on your break, before bedtime, or any while you have a few minutes. But remember all the books are steamy too. I received an ARC and wish to thank the author. This is my honest opinion and am freely giving it.
Lady Felicity has dealt with Rakes that wanted to comprise her, she wanted to help other ladies. She received a note from Lady X about Lord Evan Ashbourne being a Rake, she added this to her report for the scandal sheet.
At the house party Hope set her up with Evan but put him in Felix jacket. Felicity thought it was Felix she was racing with. The next day Evan was with Hope and almost cause them to hit Felicity which caused her to fall.
Felicity goes to sneak to Felix room to speak with him and Evan is in Felix room waiting on him. Felicity is talking about Evan and doesn't realize that it's Evan. They end up having a pillow fight and then realized that its Evan.
She tells Evan about her writing about him being a Rake, he tells her he works with secret children orphanage. They declare their love for one another. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
A sweet short novel with a nice plot, likable characters, humor and a bit of steam. I always enjoy Eliana’s playful and rhetorical-stylistic word games.
Evan and Felicity have known each other for a long time. She is friends with his sister and his twin brother, but Felicity can't stand Evan because she thinks he is a rake and writes bitter reports about him for a newspaper in order to warn other women off.
Evan is not the rake everyone believes him to be, but instead he secretly runs an orphanage.
When he and Felicity end up as partners in garden games, they realise that their feelings for each other are different than they thought...
Overall, a nice read for in between!

This is the fifth book in the Ashbourn Legacy series. We get to meet Evan the fifth brother and Lady Felicity. Lady Felicity writes articles to warn other ladies about rakes and believes Evan Ashbourn is a true rake based on information given to her. Evan Ashbourn is very serious and always working, so his twin brother convinces him to join in the house party games. Felicity and Evan are paired up during one of the games with Felicity believing Evan is his twin brother and Evan actually enjoying himself during the race. This book was very entertaining and fun to read!! I highly recommend it!!
Entertaining short story Felicity and Evan, our heroine and hero, have known each other for a long time, and nothing seems to pull them closer; instead, they are suspicious of each other. Activities at a garden house party will bring them closer together, and they will discover each other for our greatest amusement. Like the other books in the series, this is a charming, entertaining, and spicy short story.

Short but sweet! The non-rake Rake is becoming a trope favorite of mine. Evan has been maligned with a false reputation and what is worse is that the one guilty of this maligning should no better. Evan keeps things so close to his chest that his good deeds are often misconstrued. When a simple mistaken identity allows Felicity to see a different side of him it starts at tidalwve of emotion that must be explored. Their fall is as quick as their first tumble in that ill-fated race and it’s a joy. Though there is some miscommunication it is quickly overcome in this fast paced little gem.
Felicity takes information from Lady X concerning Evan Ashbourne being a rake and warns other ladies away from him. Evan is anything but how the scandal sheets portray him. Reliable, trustworthy, intelligent and dignified, Evan longs for Felicity's friendship and love. Playing children's games at the family house party brings a miraculous change over Felicity's feelings for Evan. A short quick read with a little humor and steam. I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book gifted by the author.
This was another great installment of this series (but it can be read alone). I love the situations the grumpy hero Evan gets put in that make him smile and enjoy himself. It’s fun to see how Felicity makes it her mission to save other females from unrepentant rakes. It’s a fun story for Felicity to be friends with an identical twin and abhor the other. The antics and the HEA are a fun romp you won’t be sorry to read.
Felicity was fed false information about Evan, making it seem like he was a rake!. Felicity felt it was her duty to warn other women, so she wrote articles about him being a rake and worse. I liked that Felicity gave herself a real chance to know Evan and his heart, and she found out what a heart of gold he really had.
Wonderful story of Lady Felicity and Evan Ashbourne who are together at a summer house party. Felicity is convinced Evan is a rake, but when she gets to know him better she starts to doubt that is true. Loved these two and how, once they are together, they are full in. Quick read but full story.
Fun, entertaining, sweet and spicy. All this in a beautiful short story of love and this time it's Evan Ashbourne and Felicity. It all starts with a three-legged race, attraction, instant love, a secret, understanding and heading all the way to happily ever after.
This book is about brother Evan and Felicity. She is writing about him being a rake while he is doing something very un-rake like. Who is Lady X that is feeding her the gossip? Will we ever know? Well written and very enjoyable. Fun twin shenanigans. A little steam at the end.
I liked this book! It's Felicity & Evan's story. She has been warned about him, but fate had other plans. This was a short, sweet & quick read. Highly recommend this series & author.
All the books in this series are quick and light. This one is especially cute, sweet and funny. Lots of good moments between Evan and Felicity and with Hope (his sister, her friend). Insta-love (change of attitude with someone they've known a long time as BFF-Sibling-BFF) but really enjoyable.
All the books in this series are very short. Great for a very quick read before bed or at lunch or anytime you have an hour or so to do some joyful reading.
Another easy breezy and fun addition to the Ashbourne Legacy!
Having nearly escaped a group of illustrious rakes and her own scandal, Lady Felicity is more determined than ever to protect other young ladies as well, and the current thorn in her pen is none other than Evan Ashbourne - fifth son to a duke, twin to Felix and big brother to her dear friend Hope. The man carries his own burden… but refuting his undeserved reputation of rake isn’t worth sharing his secret. Muddy hands, a new coat and a mix-up in a three-legged race - all purely accidental, or was it? - and all of a sudden neither Hannah nor Evan are certain about anything anymore…
⭐⭐⭐✨ I really enjoyed this novella. A clever little plot with a witty and droll build-up and once again two great main characters, but the wrap-up was sudden and a little too easy. This tale could have used a few more chapters, and then it would have been perfect in my opinion.
This fifth story in the Ashbourne series tells us about Evan and Felicity. Throughout, it's full of misunderstandings, mishaps, and secrets, which lead to romance and steam with a delightful happy ending. I highly recommend reading!
Another great quick read! Evan is super moody and broody, so it's fun to see his softer side unfold. Loved it!
Eliana Piers’ “The Rake and the Writer” is an outstanding historical romance that swept me away to the glittering ballrooms and clandestine affairs of Regency London. Set against a backdrop of societal rules and hidden desires, this novelette weaves a spellbinding tale of love, secrets, and redemption.

Love & Hate It is always entertaining to see how love and hate are sometimes two sides of the same coin. Evan and Felicity certainly have experience with this! Another great quick read.
