In Scotland, four American students are found with their throats slit, and each has been given a chilling haircut. The FBI arrive, but they are too late to prevent another terrible murder, and into this walks Barney Thomson, looking for a short back and sides and a new hair colour.

Ah, you know you’re onto something good when a book opens like this:
There are two kinds of people in the world.
There are those who have never accidentally murdered their work colleagues, discovered their mother is a serial killer, had to dispose of eight bodies, gone on the run from the police, hidden out in a monastery where the monks were murdered one by one, killed the monastery murderer and been allowed to walk free by the two investigating officers at the scene of the crimes.
And those who have.
Barney Thomson, infamous barber and accidental murderer attracts chaos no matter where he goes - the reaper waiting with sickle ready to slash anyone in close proximity to the unassuming alleged serial killer. THE FACE OF DEATH is a novella which takes place after the blood letting frenzy at a monastery where Barney found himself one again the target of a couple of determined investigators and that of a crazed monk on the warpath.
In THE FACE OF DEATH Barney finds himself smack bang in the middle of a four person murder, all given bad haircuts before their untimely demise. With the media abuzz with Barney, the finger pointing takes no time and Barney once again finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Much like THE END OF DAYS (another Barney Thomson novella), THE FACE OF DEATH is as short as a number 2 haircut and as sharp as barbers cutthroat razor blade. Loaded with outlandish humour and engaging yet simple characters, THE FACE OF DEATH will appeal to long time Barney Thomson fans and newcomers alike.

Hmm, mebbe a 3.5 rather than a 3. Some nice neat ideas in here (unlike the haircuts), but enough entertainment to keep me occupied for 90mins or so.
Barney's on the move and finds himself the centre of attention during an FBI investigation in the highlands of Scotland - an investigation of the death and mutilation of 4 young Americans, who, co-incidentally have just been the recipients of terrible tonsorial trimmings.
A couple of laugh out loud moments were just enough to raise this above 'nearly there' and I've enjoyed it enough to prompt me to explore more of Barney's exploits in the name of barbering.

The Face of Death is a wonderful novella that bridges the gap between the second and third Barney Thomson novels. It was a quick, easy read that made me smile as Barney once again winds up a little too close for comfort to a series of murders in the town he's passing through.
This series continues to enthrall me and I am now pressing on with the next of the novels.

Great play on words and quite witty at times, but unfortunately not so good a tale.
