Overcoming regret and shame.
Before we find forgiveness for ourselves, we often must sit with the many layers of regret and shame that can haunt us in our first steps into sobriety. The author gets vulnerable with readers by exploring these emotions in a real and relatable style.

Forgiveness and self acceptance.
This book takes a painful look at the demons of the author’s past and becomes an offering of forgiveness in a journey to embracing who she has become sober. We travel with her on this path as she also faces insecurities and introversion to find a place of self-love and self-confidence, shining light on how we can find the way in our own lives.

Finding courage in sobriety.
In Spilled, we learn to face sober life head on, experiencing the author’s emotional growth that comes after the hard parts, found by stepping into bravery, instead of running to a drink to cope.

The rebellious spirit of sobriety.
Running commentary and exploration on social and cultural norms in our drinking culture invite us to question the current thinking around alcoholism, AA, moderation, relapse, gray area drinking and other hot topics for those in recovery - all in poetry.

A Truly Poetic Journey

So raw, so powerful, so consistent, and so clear. Spilled really sang this message of being truthful and accepting in who you are, regardless of any changes that will happen (and to embrace those changes, because they are the real life waiting for you).

Being able to peer into the mind of an introvert transforming with the daily demands of socializing and needs of the world around her, Spilled became less of a story of someone becoming sober and more of a woman owning her own identity, loving herself, shedding the dead weight of alcohol use (not necessarily alcohol abuse, which allowed the reader to question and accept a new norm), and developing into the person she wants to be. After reading, I started to transform myself: by listening to my needs and being gentler to myself. Spilled gave me the courage to accept myself, my feelings and understanding to walk away, sleep, or take it slow if needed. This book is great for anyone trying to understand their relationship with alcohol, but it is also for anyone wanting permission to live well.

" as a newly sober poet and lover of the arts, I am grateful I got a chance to be an ARC reader for the debut poetry book Spilled by Camille St Martin. I resonate with these words as I try to define what drinking means to me, and how it's affected me. through Camille's vulnerable expression, I am able to see that I am not alone in "grey area drinking"-- which is a new term to me. this collection illustrates the journey of a "trying girl" who becomes someone who is finally able to quit drinking. it reflected my inner questions of "when do I know this is really bad/rock bottom?" and the poem "moderation monster" is like the essence of why I can't drink. this book talks about drunk shadows that follow us into our sober selves, and all the ways we have to create ourselves when our memories are lost to the spirits. there's a lot of self love and self encouragement poems in here. there is rhyming and spoken word vibes in many pieces, and Camille plays with different lengths of poems. if you are thinking about getting sober, considering your drinking habits, or if you need a sober friend to tell you their sober story so you don't feel like an alien in a drinking world... this book will be a guiding light.
