"I don't want the stars...I just want to feel safe for once"

Annistyn Groves’ brother always blamed their misfortune on the stars. But when Annistyn botches a hit on Bears’ leader—and her former fling—Aldean Courtenay, she knows it’s her own stupidity that’s going to get her killed. But Aldean doesn't come to carry out the hit on her—he comes to rescue her.

Whisked away from the city to hide from every Bear gunning for Annistyn and whoever wants Aldean dead, the two find themselves alone for the first time in...well, ever. As they settle into something almost cozy and domestic, Annistyn sees a new side to Aldean that leaves her questioning everything she knows about him and Aldean is forced to confront his feelings for the woman he’s loved since the moment he laid eyes on her.

But the stars are not in their favor; their newfound happiness is not meant to last. Is their destiny already written or can they take their fate into their own hands before Aldean’s secrets rip them apart?

A loose Hades and Persephone retelling and companion novel to A Little Beside You about first loves, second chances, and destinies worth challenging the stars over.

I gave myself about an hour between finishing this book and writing the review because I needed some time to think. I still don't know what to say.

As is normal, Jenni continues to become a stronger writing. The problem is that she was already an phenomenal writer. When she released Rook Di Goo, she released such a STRONG book. That has been my favourite Jenni book for so long. And you have to understand that because all of these books take place in the same universe, I am always thinking about them together. So now I'm facing this book, which was incredible and meant EVERYTHING to me, and I have to fit this into the Sauer-verse somehow.

I'm scared. If the best is yet to come, I don't think I can emotionally handle it.

I laughed. I cried. I closed the book at one point and took some deep breaths because I wasn't ready for what was happening. I strongly believe that everyone should read this book.

Jenni Sauer books always feel warm and homey, but this one felt extra gentle. She held Annistyn and Aldean so gently in her hands and let them hurt and heal, and it's almost an honor to witness it. These two deserve so many good things, and it was nice to see the book let them have them, for a little while. It's sadder than the other Evraft books, I think, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It's really a character piece, with a side portion of plot, and that's why I'm here at the Jenni Sauer buffet, so I'm not complaining, lol.

5 stars, easily.

**content warnings for abuse, violence, mild profanity, discussion of suicidal thoughts, frank conversations about sex, and the FMC has her period at one point.

**I received a copy of this book from the author. A positive review was not required. All opinions are my own.**

Every time I think I have a favorite book by Jenni Sauer, she outdoes herself again. This story is beautiful—with the redemptive themes, the trust, the LOVE these characters have. Absolutely a must read!
I remember reading A Little Besides You and asking my sister if we were supposed to like Aldean—because I found myself liking him, despite his reputation. So reading this, and learning about how he hides behind a mask of charm to hide who he really is, was fascinating. I also really love that he's a poet
Annistyn was such a great new character. After all, what is a Jenni Sauer romance without at least one joke about a hit being taken out on someone? In this case, it just happened to not be a joke. But the way she becomes more and more willing to be vulnerable with Aldean, despite everything she's been through, and the way they lean on each other is EVERYTHING to me!
I also really liked how Aldean's mom's story was explored, and how nuance was allowed there. This whole book did such a good job of showing both sides of things, of being honest about experiences both painful and joyful, and just being human. The romance was devastatingly beautiful, and I loved the Persephone and Hades vibes. Every part of it was incredible!! Highly recommend. It does discuss some slightly more adult themes, but it does so tastefully and honestly without anything crude. Overall, I happily give this book 5 stars and can't WAIT until more people can read it!

I'm beyond obsessed with this book.

I literally can't.

It's gorgeous in every way.

I have never read anything so relatably messy, beautifully angsty, and gorgeously wrapped up. It's the end all be all of my favorite books. It's a true honor to have had it grace my eyeballs.
Honestly. This book made me bawl on public transport. I highly suspect it will rent free in my head for the rest of my life.

This is the kind of book where you finish reading and then it seeps into your bones and fills the silly little cracks of your heart and you wonder how you ever lived without it.

I really wanted to love this the way I loved the authors other books, I really did. This just wasn’t for me. Maybe I just wasn’t in the right mood for it. Maybe it wasn’t cutesy or lighthearted enough. I’m not sure.

As usual, Jenni weaves such a beautiful story full of so much heart and love. I don’t know how she does it, but the detail to each character she adds in all of her stories, all their little quirks and mannerisms make them come alive in such vivid detail and make me (and others, I’m sure) feel so seen.
Aldean and Annistyn are literally the cutest and I can’t get over their story! 😍😍 There was a particular part of their love story (I won’t say which cus I don’t want to give away spoilers) that made me feel very seen because I could see a part of my own love story in them. That was definitely one of my favorite parts of this book.
If you love a story full of heart and poetry and mafia romance vibes that still feels cozy, then this is the one for you!

I have been waiting for this book.

When I read A Little Beside You and found out Jenni was writing a spin-off focusing on Aldean, I immediately knew I had to have it. I had so many feelings and questions about Aldean after finishing Bender and Cori's book. I knew there was something more to him, but I had no idea what that might be.

There is so, so much more to him.

I felt rather like Annistyn, surprised at every new facet that was revealed. Aldean seemed so simple on the surface, if you believe what he's trying to give you.

This is such a cozy book. It was exactly the soothing thing I needed after the bittersweet trilogy I just finished. I wanted something happier, something that would feel like a warm hug after the hardship, and this book was absolutely it. There's hard stuff, difficult conversations, significant mental health issues the characters experience, but there's always something soft despite the hard things.

Aldean and Annistyn are officially my favorite Evraft couple (so far!). I adore both of them. They bring out the best in each other, see thing about each other that no one else has ever bothered to see.

If mental health struggles can be triggering for you, here's a brief list of things that I saw in it so you can decide for yourself (please note, I could have forgotten or overlooked something--if you're concerned about something in particular being in it, I'm sure you could ask the author; she's lovely): . Again, I'm not claiming this is an exhaustive list but it is the major mental health / abuse issues I noted while reading, so if any of these trigger you, it may be best not to read this particular novel. Also if blood triggers you .

The handling of mental health in this book is excellent--it isn't the defining characteristic of the characters, it isn't neatly wrapped up and "healed" by the end, but it is dealt with and talked about and treated as just part of the person.

Annistyn is a wonderful lead. Aldean is great and I wish we could've gotten even more of his POV because I loved him.

This is one time when the refusal of two characters to communicate did not bother me. It was so in-character for both of them to not talk and make assumptions about each other that I fully believed it. This isn't necessarily "miscommunication" (which I know many hate) but more of "I don't need to talk to the other person, I'm already certain of *insert thing / emotion here.* It wasn't annoying or irritating or ham-fisted at any point.

This book gets five blood oranges from me. I was waiting so eagerly for it and I worried, would I over-hype it and not enjoy it? But no, it was amazing. If you're expecting a high-stakes plot, shift gears, because this is a very cozy book that has definitive stakes but isn't some high octane thrill ride from beginning to end. This book is softer, sadder, something that feels deeply in every sentence. Sometimes a character's internal monologue and spoken dialogue could be repetitive, but it's a small flaw compared to everything else being so good.

I can't wait until Book 3 is in my hands. The character it focuses on is briefly introduced here and I'm so, so curious to find out what his story is.

Me reading ALBY: Aldean is the worst. Idk how Jenni Sauer could possibly make me like him
Me, one minute into Aldean's POV in this book: ok well actually he's just a little guy and he's misunderstood and he needs to be protected

Me whenever one of the characters was a little *too* relatable: okay haha let's chill guys I think we need to go have a happy fun time now (jk I love it when they're too relatable)

Umm okay idk how to write reviews. This was a great book, lots of cozy moments, Ally the monkey is amazing, Aldean and Annistyn are so cute, lowkey reading this was free therapy. I'm actually obsessed with how Aldean seems like a terrible person in ALBY and then here you find out what's going on inside his head (again, someone needs to protecc him). Also the theme of we're-choosing-this-and-fate-can't-stop-us is fantastic. Thank you.

One content note for anyone who cares, this book talks about sex more than other Evraft books (helpfully, the content guide mentions this, def read that before you read the book to make sure you're comfy with everything) and it was more/different than I'm personally comfy with so I did skim some parts (personal preference thing), although I think this counts as closed door or fade to black or no spice or whatever (idk there are too many of those descriptors), and now I'm rambling, there is also some tough mental health topics and uhhh what else maybe some violence and maybe other stuff but i don't think so. Again, read the content guide if you need to! I need to stop including content guides in my reviews maybe because they unnecessarily stress me out AHAHA okay anyway

Uhhh what else
I hope one day there is a novella about Ally the monkey because I think he deserves it
Maybe Nivi too, she is cool
I DIDN'T MENTION NIVI BEFORE
Nivi is amazing
OK THAT IS ALL GOODBYE

Unwritten In The Stars intrigued me the second I saw the genre. I really had no clue what to expect with a Cozy Mafia Romance.

What I got was a very fun, sweet read. Annystin and Aldean are very fun characters, and their chemistry is believable.

Unfortunately I felt like we are told more about their character than we are really shown. Their thought process is often very long and sometimes repetitive. I think I would have liked more to see them do/say something than think so much.

I did like seeing their struggles with mental health and that they aren't just healed by each other. In Romance mental health is too often portrayed as something your partner can just improve for you - which obviously just isn't realistic. Annystin and Aldean aren't magically well at the end of the book and sometimes one of them will say something that nags the other, and I really really liked that about the book.

My biggest issue with Unwritten In The Stars was like I already mentioned above the repetition of thoughts and feelings. I think there are also a lot of parts in the book that would have benefitted from being a lot shorter.

Overall though I had a lot of fun and would definitely recommend this book if you are in the mood for a fun, cozy Romance. I might pick up other installments in the series in the future.

Thank you to the author for the e-arc!

Every bit as adorable as A Little Beside You.

Is it realistic for two people with as much trauma as Aldean and Annistyn to be so perfectly imperfect? I can hear the realists saying, "You know it wouldn't really work that way." But guess what? I don't care. I'll always love a story that lets the perfect side of imperfect people shine and gives a happy ending to the stories that, according to Aldean, don't get a happy ending. And this is just that kind of story. And a tough girl who just needs the safety to soften + a bad boy who is secretly a total softie already? Um. Yes, please.

A girl who has always slipped through the cracks and has never been safe. A boy that looks privileged but hides a tender heart and bruised skin behind an arrogant mask. A failed assassination attempt. An impossible romance.

Content Alerts (Minor Spoiler warning):
Frequent memories about handsy make out sessions (not overly descriptive). A couple frank though non-explicit conversations about past s*xual partners (or lack thereof) and desire for/willingness to wait for intimacy at present. Implied, post-marriage s*x.

I want to begin my review by acknowledging that I received a free e-arc copy for review purposes.

With that said, I *LOVED* Unwritten in the Stars. I gave myself a few days after finishing it before writing my review, allowing for the emotions and thoughts to simmer for a bit.
Every book of Sauer's that I have read, I have fallen entirely in love with, and Unwritten in the Stars is no exception. Every book of Sauer's I see myself reflected back in the FMC's. And I loved Annistyn, but it wasn't her that I saw myself in. Quite surprisingly, when I read Aldean's POVs, I could see myself staring back at me in an assortment of many little ways.
Both Aldean and Annistyn felt so incredibly real to me, they were well fleshed out. The story was perfectly cozy and had me captured within the first few chapters.
I am so incredibly thankful for this book, it means more than my words could possibly capture.
All I can say is go read this book!! If you loved the other Evraft Galaxy books, are looking for a cozy read, or looking to relate to perfectly imperfect characters, this one is for you.

Truly I think every Jenni Sauer book is even better than the one before. I really enjoyed A Little Beside You but something about Unwritten in the Stars just truly clicked with me.
The description of “cozy mafia romance” doesn’t sound like it should work but it sums it up perfectly.
I love a cozy romance. But I also loved the honest, unapologetic representation of women (which we all know Jenni does so well) as well as beautiful representations of mental health, body image, learning to trust and communicate. (And I’m so glad I’m not the only one who was wayyyy too intrigued by Aldean in the first book and I love that we got his story).
Definitely one of those stories I’ll read again and find even more I didn’t catch the first time.

I did not expect to love this book as much as I did. the first book in this series is one of my favourite books and Cori and Bender have my whole heart, so admittedly, Aldean and Annistyn had A LOT to live up to, but live up to it they did

there were honestly moments where I thought they might surpass Benri but they didn't quite.

This story is one of pain and heartache and love and beauty and it was so well done. these characters had me laughing and shouting and crying. they felt so real and so did their struggles

if you like stories about boys who feel deeply and grumpy girls who really just don't know how to be loved, this one is for you.

One day, I spent longer than expected in an airport, and this book meant I didn’t even mind. I read the whole thing (yes, the whole chonker), and I loved it. It’s absolutely beautiful.

The first book in this series, A Little Beside You, was one of my favorite reads back in 2021, and now Unwritten in the Stars is shaping up to be my favorite read of 2025. That’s saying a lot, coming from someone who doesn’t read a lot of romance. Jenni’s books are always the perfect combination of cozy and heart-rending.

What to expect from UnitS: cozy mafia romance, low spice, second chance romance, only one tiny house, mental health rep, Hades and Persephone vibes, cuddling and poetry

Some of my favorite things about UnitS:
- it’s cozy and character-driven
- the mental health rep is honest and full of compassion
- both MCs are so stuck in their heads, and that’s honestly so realistic and relatable
- thoughtful truths phrased poignantly
- characters having hard conversations gently
- also they’re freaking adorable

I’ve never had a desire to annotate a book, but as soon as I finished this book, I wish I had. There were so many passages that expressed things I’ve never thought to put into words. I want to reread this book and mark all those places so I can come back and dwell on its poignantly-phrased truths. I’ve never been through what Annistyn or Aldean have, but their experiences are human experiences, and we’ve all been through hard things. These characters made me feel seen.
