It was fun using the rain stick as I read the book. I like that there was a picture that showed me when to shake the rain stick. I was surprised that he shakes the rain stick instead of just turning it over. I did not like that it was not easy getting the rain stick to stay in place. I would have my students create rain sticks using toilet paper rolls, construction paper, tissue paper or something like that, rice, and rubber bands. I like how he talked about how the drought affected so many animals and how they worked together to try to solve the problem. I would read this during units about weather, Native Americans, and music. I also liked how it scattered some Spanish words into the story. The battery on the rain stick in the CUE library is dead, but it was still cool to flip anyway because it still had rice or something in it.
