All David Anderson wanted was a better education for the students in St. Luke, Minnesota. He never expected it to cost him his teaching career, his best friend, and almost his wife. But when you take on the dysfunctional, sports-crazed, gridlocked American school system, you're lucky just to get out in one piece.

This book was a mixed bag. On the one hand, it felt like it was written by an overly earnest 20 year old missionary who made everything about golly gee small town this and the lord motivates me to do that. The writing was hokey to say the least. It was like a parody of small time Minnesota gosh-darn dontcha know lifestyle where everyone is perfect and neighborly.

On the other hand, the substance of the book was outstanding as it gave us a look at how our nation's school systems have degraded into battles over money that are largely being won by teacher's unions who will do anything to maintain their control.

The story revolves around an English teacher who just happens to be a hunky former football player and the beloved assistant coach of the high school team for many years. The head coach is married to the head of the local union who doesn't really want to be a pawn for the asshole who runs the state union but she is under intense pressure to do so -- and does.

On the third hand, the characters were written like a bad hallmark movie.

Overall, the book is quite short and easy to read and the underlying message so powerful and important that I enjoyed it despite its shortcomings.
