Lost in proscriptive reveries about Lemon Drop Valley, Spark inadvertently chisels a marble figure of Stella and sees it as a token of his inevitable return to Lemon Drop Valley. A glass mechanism Aboo-Kaboom looming from the cover of a book given by Tonino, helps Spark to remove a self-imposed ban. And he races down to the valley. Accompanied by Tonino, Spark encounters, at the site of Aboo-Kaboom, an insidious dwarf Zhabrey making fraudulent promises to Aboo Kaboom's owner Narcissus. Zhabrey pictures Stella's miraculous transformations in which Spark and Tonino smell a looming catastrophe. As their initial plan to warn Stella failed, the friends make a perilous decision – to disarm the evil dwarf Zhabrey. However, right in front of Zhabrey’s dungeon Spark looses Tonino and falls down a cliff. Meanwhile, the cruel Volchaks try to capture power in Lemon Drop Valley. To avoid disaster, Narcissus lets his daughter, Moora, wed the Volchaks’ general. Here is his wedding announcement: “I’ve reached my life’s apocalypse. It’s time to rein in the warfare, And turn the valley, fair and square, Into a heaven: read my lips. I’ll marry off my daughter Moora, Opt for Volchak as her consort. He’ll bust a gut to be her mural, I mean, support of any sort.” However, the situation remains menacing. Volchaks’ general pursues Stella, who, fleeing from persecution, falls into a deep gorge. By the end of book two, Spark and Stella are in no danger, Stella breaks faith with Spark and the fate of Tonino remains unknown.
This is an excellent book for young readers and teachers looking for content to share with classes that are interested in foreign literature (especially Russian translation material) from around grade 6 and up.
The illustration featured in this book is breathtaking, and the story itself is interspersed with short songs that help keep the mood light. I read the first book in this series as well, and I found it just as much fun discovering this new world with Spark, the stone man, as reading the first book in this series as well.
