In 9 INCARNATE Egypt’s great gods and goddesses arrive by comet bringing hope of unity and secrets of the pyramids. However, the beloved Isis isn't among the Arrivals and preternatural investigator Caitlin Diggs begins hearing the goddess in her head. Could Diggs’s previous exposure to a crystal artifact substantiate the belief that Isis has stored her essence on Earth and consequently now shares her human body?
Perplexed, Diggs turns to a scientist to explain the Arrivals, not to mention the weirdness which includes a coinciding mass disappearance and assassination of the president. Diggs surmises the deities may be preparing a new Egypt until a lethal threat of global warming emerges. More perplexing, is her co-alignment with Isis an alliance or hindrance? Diggs may have to make the ultimate sacrifice if she is to keep Egypt’s past from ending Earth’s future, and all the while maintain her integrity.

Since I listened to book 2 and then book 4, there is a little bit of a gap in Caitlin's transformation as a character; although, I think we get enough detail to somewhat piece together how she had transformed and some of the events that lead to her current investigation in an alternate universe. Often I have a hard time getting through sci-fi books in general; however, this book (and series) incorporates a diverse variety of elements from other genres such as mystery, romance, and fantasy/paranormal that makes it a "sci-fi" book I can actually enjoy. There is an incredible amount of detail and description throughout the entire book, which made this a book I had to listen to twice to fully understand and absorb the storyline in its entirety. 9 Incarnate as a whole was somewhat fast paced and flowed really well. There was clearly a lot of research involved to blend the history of the Egyptian Gods into the story. I think I personally would have liked the inclusion of the Egyptian Gods more if I had had more prior knowledge and would have been able to have a better idea of them before listening. I liked that author was able to make the new transformed Caitlin/Isis/Caitlin impersonator different but just as likeable, strong, and relatable as Caitlin had been previous books; because she is an awesome character and I find myself intrigued by her.
I thought the narration was pretty good; however, I am not as happy with the narrator's performance in this book as I was with her performance in book 1, Blood Web. I feel like her performance made this a harder listen in general because there were quite a few instances where I felt that I just simply couldn't tell who was speaking because there wasn't enough character voice differentiation.
Starta writes well, and definitely tells a great story. I like the books in the Caitlin Diggs series, and I was honored to be able to listen to this one as an audiobook. It's a wonderfully told story, and the narrative fits the plot. Diggs is a remarkable character, and her investigative techniques blend perfectly with whatever mystery she needs to solve. Mystery, fantasy, and a bit sci-fi within the grand story. The attention to detail is imperative when writing a suspenseful book, no matter the background or genre of the story, and this works, without all the unnecessary details that bog down a story. I enjoyed this book and will always read whatever Starta writes, without expectation.
Agent Caitlin Diggs is back and still adjusting to her new life in the parallel universe. She is posing as her alternate self because this universe’s Caitlin Diggs died trying to protect her. It is a weird concept for her to grasp at first, but she is learning.
When the President of the United States is mysteriously murdered, Caitlin and Briana must go to work to figure out if it was a demon who committed the crime. Armed with paranormal powers and Briana’s ability to cast spells, they handle the paranormal side of FBI investigations.
They feel like they may be getting clues, when suddenly, the whole demon population on the planet suddenly disappears. Now, this is the alternate universe that Caitlin is in, so demons are as common as humans.
When strange orbs enter Earth and begin trying to communicate with the population, Caitlin and her crew at the FBI begin to theorize that they may be dealing with ancient Egyptian gods and goddesses. This intrigues Caitlin more than usual because she is so constantly referred to as the goddess Isis.
When the Ennead actually make it to Earth, their motives come into question. Are they here to help humanity, or are they here to take over. Battling the investigation into the President’s death as well as trying to figure out why gods and goddesses are reappearing on Earth, Agent Diggs has no lack of action in her life.
With a character as well written and likeable as Caitlin Diggs, I feel fans of any genre would be able to get into this book. The rest of the characters are also great supporting characters. They are all pretty likable in their own ways and have strong character arcs. They are well-written, and I don’t feel like any character was paid less attention to
The writing makes for a nice reading pace. It flows together nicely and has a nice balance of dialogue.
The first half was really fast-paced and was easy to read. There was so much happening that it was just too hard to put down. As the novel progressed, it did start to slow down a bit. It was full of action, but I felt that it could have been compressed to get to the point a little quicker.
There may have been too many references to gods and goddesses for me to really fully enjoy it. But, that is the plot of the story, so I had to accept it and push through it. Being a genre I normally don’t dive into very often could have been part of the reason why I felt it was slow in some areas.
For those of us SF readers who cut our teeth on Asimov and Heinlein, SF has opened a portal into a world or worlds of possibilities. Think back to the original Star Trek series. What were just ideas then - total body imaging, instant communication, etc. - have become facts. Even the world of immutable physics has been turned on its ear. What hasn't changed is the vision of writers to imagine what could be - The Other.
Starta has done just that. He's created a believable heroine who, in whatever iteration she exists, has the reader rooting for her. Is Caitlin an FBI agent? Instrument of Isis? Murderer of the President of the United States? Yes. And No. With 9 Incarnate, Strata has resurrected, pardon the pun, the gods and goddesses of ancient Egypt and involved them in a tale where they threaten the very existence of humankind on Earth. For example, is Hathor or her reincarnation really the psychotic goddess wanting to dominate the new world order? Can Isis stop her? Should she? After all, she's residing in one of Caitlin's existences.
If you love mixed genres - SF, urban fantasy, mystery, and romance, this is one tale you won't want to miss. Kudos to Starta. I was hooked from the getgo. There's some real science here as well as speculative fiction. It's a read you won't want to put down until the satisfying end. Looking forward to the next work by this up and coming talented writer.
A Copy of this Book Was Given To Me By The Author In Exchange For An Honest Review*
This book has something for everyone:- Science Fiction, Science Fact, Magic, Parallel universes, A murder to solve, Romance, Fantasy (You have to accept a mass visit by the original Gods from Egypt) and this mixture does slow down your reading somewhat. Or at least it did mine. It took me as least twice as long as I would normally take to read this many pages as I had to keep going over what I’d read. It was worth it though, as the author manages to believably combine all of the above into a really gripping yarn, and once you realise that this is an alternative universe to the one you are reading in, you will cheer Caitlin as she and her friend set about solving the various mysteries, helped (or hindered) by sharing her identity with Isis.

Very original story line, I loved it! Caitlin Diggs is a preternatural investigator. She is investigating a murder and hears a voice in her head. She finds that she is one with the Goddess Isis. With the help of her friend Briana they set out to solve the crime and the mystery the Egyptian pyramids hold.
A fun read. I loved the blend of Egyptian Gods/Goddesses with the mortal world. Also the mystery and the originality of the story line. Caitlin was very likable, the situation she was put in, and the way she handled it was fascinating to watch unfold. A well written story I find all will enjoy.
Caitlin Diggs is at it again in this supernatural thriller. The President had been murdered and Agent Diggs and her partner Brianna McFadden are of course called in. This is a great read that takes the reader on a whirlwind journey to ancient times. Who isn't curious about the pyramids? The author does a great job incorporating the natural world with the supernatural one. I suggest you read all the books in the series, but which ever one you read you will love the writer's style and interesting story. There is enough background information that no matter which book you grab you will know the whole story, but believe me you will want to read all of this books!
