This would make a great read-a-loud for girls and especially boys

Borgon wants to be more like his dad, especially after his mum says that very thing. In his cave on the Lost Desert, breakfast is a very important thing. It is to be eaten noisily, messily and with a huge burp at the end. When Borgon moans that he never gets to do anything dangerous except burp, his dad mistakenly tells him about the most dangerous breakfast he ever got. He whispers it in Borgon’s ear and tells him not to tell his mum.

Borgon jumps at the idea to his dad’s dismay and sets off to repeat the feat of his father.

This is a funny story, and you'll never believe what the dangerous breakfast turns out to be

Borgon lives with his mum and dad, Fulma and Fulgut. They are the last barbarians living in the Lost Desert. After being told by his parents that he needs to be a more real Barbarian, Borgon sets out to prove his Barbarian-ness by making the Best Barbarian Breakfast Ever - it just needs to have two special ingredients…fun and danger.

He must journey to the Fire Lands, the home of the most nastiest creatures in the desert. Only problem is he doesn’t know the way and his annoying and nosey neighbour Grizzy has decided to tag along too. When things get a little bit too hot for comfort the duo will have to learn to work together if they’re going to make it back alive…

Packed with dangerous adventure, savage barbarians, axes and fiery dragons this delightful short story will entertain young savages with its slapstick humour and mismatched pairing of Borgon and Grizzy.

To help readers get to grips with the story there are character profiles and a map at the beginning before the action gets going. The chapters are short, the text is nicely spaced out and there are black and white pencil illustrations throughout.

This is a great read for children who are growing in confidence and beginning to read chapter books.

Recommended for 6+.

Borgon, the son of Barbarians, surprises his mother with a slab of meat for breakfast. She’s not impressed, and his father tells him he needs to catch a dangerous breakfast to impress his mother. Borgon’s father tells him a secret: how he impressed Falma with a dangerous breakfast. Borgon decides to copy his father and sets out to catch the same dangerous breakfast his father caught. That decision results in danger, ridicule and questions Borgon wants answered.
I enjoyed the humour. The book is set in the Stone Age and implies the danger is dinosaurs or something that deadly.
Recommended for readers eight years and older.
