Another Vessel of Self is as the title it is an extension of myself, another me. All of my thoughts, desires, feelings, wants, and emotions have bled onto the page for years to create this other sense of being. A living, breathing book of poetry that is as much a part of me as anything else. Each subsection/chapter in this book displays my evolution as a person, they personify each peak and trough of my existence. Every lucid sunset that I have gazed upon and each hollow night that has engulfed me is personified in word. It is me, and I am it.Compiled from poems ranging from the year 2019 to the year 2023, this is a collection spanning four years. Within those years, there have been many different versions of myself; this collection perfectly encapsulates each transformation of self and fully displays the nature of my psyche in each stage of my life.
Shea Kenyon was born and raised in Fife, Scotland. From a young age he has always been inspired by the written and spoken word; telling elaborate stories to his friends growing up. But ever since the age of fifteen poetry has been his main outlet. For six years he has written compelling poems that tell tales of anguish, love, insanity, and dissolution; much of these works having a significant philosophical undertone. At first poetry was a way for him to bleed his emotions onto the page, to help him feel sane. However, over time this evolved into an art form, one where the words he has penned carry remarkable artistic weight.
A review in the form of an open letter to Shea Kenyon:
Dear Shea,
I want to start off by thanking you for reaching out and for inviting me to read and review a copy of your debut poetry collection, Another Vessel of Self. Please forgive me for not being able to release a review for this book sooner, for I make a big deal out of putting together a review that will prove to be the most beneficial. I read your poetry collection in its entirety at a Silent Book Club meeting back in March, reread it when I finished, and then dipped back in here and there as a refresher. As I read your collection, my belief is that your collection touches upon your personal, psychological, mental, and emotional struggles that took place during your lifetime leading up to this point and how you express these challenges through poetry.
I really admired the structure of your poems and I felt you did a fine job finding different ways to illustrate what you were writing and what you want to convey. You have a great grasp on your technique and can go forward in future poems and collections with versatility. You have really done a fine job on the often-difficult craft of short poems of very few lines, not like a limerick or one of those four-line poems where the last words rhyme with one another, like a nursery rhyme or something you would find on the tag of a Beanie Baby, but something that demonstrates that literature is a form of art and makes my reading experience a fulfilling one. I see you demonstrate this is "Feel" and "Idle Misfortunes."
Your one poem, "The Bridge to Change Has Collapsed," is especially a standout poem. The imagery in this poem is so intense that I can feel the tightness wrapping around me as the reader putting myself in your point of view.
My concern as we speak is that I wish you covered more. I would have like to know more about your other aspects of thinking rather than just those feelings that were negative and intense. It kind of reminds me of the phase in which Taylor Swift only wrote and sang breakup songs. It also reminded me of the period of time in which Greta Thunberg spoke about her environmental concerns, but did not offer solutions. I was over the moon when she put together an anthology of environmental essays and articles that touched upon solutions to such concerns. I believe this poetry collection is your introduction to the literary world and we want to know about what is concerning you and be an audience that can learn and better understand you, but we also want to learn more about who you are and what you want to become and accomplish.
Your tools and technique are down pat and I encourage you to keep expanding on your craft. I just want to see you expand on what it is you are writing. Of course, you should write what you want and need to write about, but know that when you are writing, the world is your oyster and you should be writing about anything and everything that you wish. I want to see you explore the many different aspects of your life and thinking.
I hope you continue to write and publish and I am looking forward to seeing what you have in store. Keep up the good work!
