Nicola Henderson, victims services advocate, has a stalker. When a sinister delivery arrives at her home, she and her family flee to a remote location, deep in the rockies, called Mountain Shadows Lodge. Although Nicola has fled her stalker, what she encounters at Mountain Shadows Lodge is so much worse. There are only a few other guests, and the first night begins with fun. There's a campfire, a ghost story, a prank that goes wrong, and too much alcohol. The next morning one of the guests is missing. Through the search and investigation, Nicola learns not everyone is a stranger to the place, or to each other, and the official record of those in attendance, has one name missing.

Great story, great characters! I love when the plot twists aren’t obvious. What a great way to debut as a new author! Looking forward to the next one!!

A perfect read for a cold winter’s night
While I do not know if Mountain Shadows was intentionally published in the coldest month of the year, the story provides a wonderful opportunity to read an enjoyable suspense novel while bundled up under a blanket sipping hot chocolate. I savored this solidly written story, which has lots of twists that made me want to keep reading. The dialogue is well-written. The author’s mastery of the active voice propels the reader forward. The remote mountain resort, with a crystal clear lake, waterfalls, mountain trails, and forest, is so well described that I could feel myself transported there. Characters are multidimensional: the harried, overworked couple with their two inquisitive children and rambunctious dog, the three guys in their twenties hoping to party away the weekend, the three women celebrating their fifth reunion, the resort owner and his assistant, and a beautiful, mysterious woman. The tension that Nicola feels – and her attempts to rationalize her fears – is very realistic. While Nicola’s concern about her stalker is the predominant plot, multiple subplots emerge, culminating in the murder of one of the resort guests. I am usually good at identifying villains early on in a story, but in Mountain Shadows, I got it wrong. The book ends without resolving the identity of the stalker, presumably to set the stage for a sequel. I can’t wait to read the sequel to find out how the author further develops this plot. This is an excellent debut novel, and I look forward to reading more from Laurie McLure.
