Well, buzzkill on the VERY FIRST PAGE:

Sonic the Hedgehog 2: The Secret Admirer title page, with dedication 'in memory of Jeffrey Scott Davey, age 7, one of Sonic's greatest fans.'

Yikes.

As for the actual book: I've mentioned this in my updated review of Mrs. Brisby's Remembering Game that a lot of these books seem like they're just a way to capitalise on existing IP in a quick and cheap way. Granted, this book actually has a story, since there's no scratch-and-sniff gimmick that can draw in younger readers such that a story isn't really required, but I have a hard time thinking anyone would necessarily like this without being an existing fan, especially of the cartoon (though Sally's design here is from the pilot/early Archie comic series after Issue #0).

Then again, young readers like all kind of weird things, so who knows? (Granted, CURRENT young readers would wonder about "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" when their frame of reference would be much different.)

For fans of the Archie series, this is... a much younger reader version of the kind of stories that the earliest issues would run: a very predictable scheme where . Difference is it's an illustrated 24-page younger reader book instead of a 28-page "floppy" comic book. It's not bad if you're used to those stories, but more current younger readers might be more familiar with the IDW Sonic, of the print versions.

I don't know. It's very *okay.* Don't hate it, don't love it, probably best as a nostalgia piece.

WELCOME Snively to the picture book trilogy.
Cool little detail, if you are not sure why the video game reference on top it's actually noting that it's the second book in the trilogy. Even Sally's hair isn't the right color compared to the modern comics or Up Against the Wall book.
The cover of this book is just awesome. AGAIN they show truthfully what the book is going to be like. There's aren't that many books that are this honest with their covers. Everyone is thinking about The Secret Admirer.
There are a couple of moments I just love like the ever famous No Nintendo Playing rule Robotnik set up... (Does that mean Sonic supported Nintendo seven years before hand??? Hehehe)
I also find it funny the store explicitly says Robotnik's Swatbots were out of breath chasing Sonic... (Breathless robots.)
The banter between Sally and Sonic is cute and the personalities are strongly portrayed really well.
I have a theory that the Smog Sucker 2000 is as much of a reference to this being the second book as Wall-Upper 3000 is for the third book.
I also find it hilarious that Antoine actually gave himself medals of honor.
I do think Sonic is a bit of a jerk laughing at Tails. (It seems a little out of character.)
Concerting I love neckties, seeing Sonic and Tails in one is just awesome.
Also Robotnik having a Stupidity Flyswatter is just funny anyway you think of it. Oh did I mention Snively and Cluck are in the book.

First time I discovered this, I was like I didn't think they would introduce action to even younger children in the 90's.

Hah, this book showed up in the thrift store I work at and I had to read it for the nostalgia. For one thing I thought it was weird that it had the logo for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 the Genesis game but it was based off the Archie comics. In the story, the gang gets a message from
a secret admirer who predictably turns out to be Robotnik.

My son collects Sonic the Hedgehog books, so this was a great addition to his library. It's a Golden Book, which means it's technically for younger kids, but anyone who is a fan of Sonic will enjoy it.
