Frederick Taylor is a British novelist and historian specialising in modern German history.
He was educated at Aylesbury Grammar School and read History and Modern Languages at Oxford University. He did postgraduate work at Sussex University on the rise of the extreme right in Germany in the early twentieth century. Before embarking on the series of historical monographs for which he is best known, he translated The Goebbels Diaries 1939–1941 into English and wrote novels set in Germany.
This book follows the TV series fairly faithfully right to the end... of the book but not the series. I was disappointed that none of the issues were properly resolved as they had been in the show. I was willing to overlook acceptable story cuts - it isn't easy to condense 13 hour episodes into one book - and changes made due to Gary Holton's death, but why did it have to end so abruptly?
Having been a fan of the show and watched it many times it was nice to read the parts in Spain that were missing due to the death of Gary Holton who played Wayne mid way through filming. The majority of the book is exactly as it is on TV, but several scenes are missing and it ends before the final wedding scene on the boat and the police chase.. It's a great read for fans of the show.
