The perfect lighthearted summer read for 11 - 14 year olds

Mo Merrydrew. Reluctant Vampire Queen. A human leader of vampires. Who would have thought it? Mo had always dreamed of being a leader, but never thought she'd be chosen to be the Vampire Queen of Great Britain. But Mo is in a slump - things haven't been going so well. Yes, the vampires she rules over have pledged their allegiance to her, and yes, there now seems to be a relative harmony between humans and vampires, but she's also managed to blow up the Vampire King himself, and lose her gorgeous boyfriend Luca. Frankly all she wants to do right now is sit on the sofa and eat cheesy puffs. She's had enough of being Vampire Queen.
But when a high-profile celebrity is apparently attacked by a vampire, and the country is once again buzzing with rumours about vampires on the prowl, Mo is going to have to summon all her queenly strength to find a way to bring about a lasting peace between vampires and humans. If vegans can give up dairy, can't vampires ditch the blood? Looks like Mo's reign as Vampire Queen is far from over ...

The Reluctant Vampire Queen Finds Her Fangs
(The Reluctant Vampire Queen - Book 3)
Rating: 4/5

“The Reluctant Vampire Queen Finds Her Fangs” is a sparkling gem in the Young Adult paranormal fantasy genre, masterfully blending humour, supernatural elements, and the universal struggles of teenage life. Jo Simmons has crafted a narrative that is both refreshingly original and comfortingly familiar, creating a world where vampires exist, overseen by an unlikely human monarch.

At the heart of this enchanting tale is Mo Merrydrew, a character who defies traditional vampire lore. As the human Vampire Queen of Great Britain, Mo embodies the classic "fish out of water" trope with a delightful twist. Her journey from an ordinary girl with leadership aspirations to the ruler of Britain's vampire population is both hilarious and heartwarming. Mo's relatable nature shines through as she grapples with the weight of her royal responsibilities while longing for the simplicity of binging on cheesy puffs and avoiding the complexities of vampire politics.

Simmons excels in creating a vivid supporting cast. Mo's adoptive parents stand out as pillars of support, offering a touching portrayal of unconditional love amidst supernatural chaos. The vampire subjects, each with their quirks and challenges, add depth to the world-building and provide ample opportunities for both comedy and conflict.

The plot takes an exciting turn when a high-profile celebrity apparently falls victim to a vampire attack, threatening the delicate balance Mo has worked hard to maintain. This incident forces our reluctant queen to step up, showcasing her growth as a character and a leader. Mo's innovative approach to problem-solving – like pondering whether vampires could give up blood as vegans give up dairy – demonstrates the novel's clever blend of modern sensibilities with vampire mythology.

What sets this book apart is its pitch-perfect tone. Simmons strikes a delicate balance between light-hearted humour and more serious themes of responsibility, identity, and social integration. The narrative voice is witty and engaging, peppered with pop culture references and sardonic observations that will resonate with both teenage readers and adults alike.

While the book doesn't shy away from the challenges Mo faces, including the loss of her boyfriend Luca and the accidental demise of the Vampire King, it maintains an overall upbeat and optimistic tone. This makes it an ideal summer read – entertaining without being overly demanding, yet still providing enough depth to keep readers invested in Mo's world.

The comparison to "Geek Girl" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" is apt, as the novel shares the self-aware humour of the former and the supernatural-meets-teenage-life ethos of the latter. However, “The Reluctant Vampire Queen Finds Her Fangs|” carves out its own unique identity, offering a fresh take on vampire lore that feels contemporary and relevant.

In conclusion, Jo Simmons has delivered a highly entertaining addition to the YA fantasy genre. With its blend of humour, heart, and supernatural hijinks, “The Reluctant Vampire Queen Finds Her Fangs” is sure to captivate readers looking for a fun, easygoing vampire tale with unexpected depth. The satisfying happy ending leaves readers content, yet eager for more adventures in Mo's quirky vampire kingdom.

This novel is a must-read for anyone who enjoys their fantasy with a hefty dose of laughter and a side of cheesy puffs.

Having just finished "The Reluctant Vampire Queen," the last book in the series, I have to say I was a bit disappointed. It felt like it dragged on, and honestly, I didn't think it was the best of the bunch. I much preferred the first two books. So, while I probably won't be picking this one up again, I'll definitely be rereading the earlier ones. I'd still recommend giving it a read and seeing what you think for yourself, though.
