As any good children’s book should be, the story was interesting for an adult. It was a historical novel presenting life in a Texas town shortly after the War Between the States. Good factual information as well as an interesting plot.

Great historical fiction children's novel that takes place in Jefferson, TX just after the emancipation of the slaves. My family has had this book since I was little, and I remember my mom or grandmother reading it aloud when I was little. It's a rather short book, and this was the first time I read through it and not just listened to it. It was quite a fun read. My great aunt Marj went to church with the author and would always give us Smith children a copy of the new Jackie Stem books when they were published, and always signed by the author herself with a personal note to us! I think I would like to adapt it to a screenplay and make it into a movie some day.
