Finally, My Forever

Nicole Chapman had a picture-perfect life, at least that’s what the neighbors thought. But inside her marriage was a controlling husband who ran her life completely. It wasn’t until she found out his lies, that she broke free of him. And one night, after she was coaxed into going out, she ran into a person she never imagined she would see again.

The title of Finally, My Forever by A.P. Spencer could apply to the author, herself. This is the debut novel from someone who has wanted to publish a book all her life. Finally, My Forever is that book.

Finally, My Forever tells the story of Nicole Berger Chapman. Nicole was one of the “good” kids in school who fell hard for her high school sweetheart. They married after high school and were blessed with two children. To outsiders, their life seemed like a fairy tale. Inside the house was a totally different story, though. Nicole entered the marriage with a lot of misconceptions that were nurtured by Charles, her husband: the husband is the head of the household; the husband controls the money; the wife gets an allowance; the wife goes nowhere without her husband’s permission. Physical “correction” is appropriate when necessary. And it seems to be constantly necessary.

Nicole’s mother senses what’s going on, but it’s only through the deep conversations with her best friend, Trish, that Nicole’s eyes are opened. She separates from Charles. Feeling scared and inferior, Nicole is too afraid to even engage in new friendships, never mind any new romance. Then along comes the BMOC (“Big Man on Campus”) from Nicole’s high school days. And he remembers her.

I was confused in the first two pages but soon caught up to Spencer’s story-telling style. She succeeds in braiding the stories of different people as they negotiate through different timelines.

Spencer crafts the story — stories, actually — very well. Many readers will probably identify with Nicole’s story. Our first love is, by definition, our first love. There isn’t necessarily an instruction book for how to work your way through your “first.” That’s where friends and family come in. Like many of us, Nicole had to learn to trust her gut.

Not only is Finally, My Forever an engaging read, it can also serve as a trusted guide through romantic relationships. I thoroughly enjoyed the novel.
