This is the first novel I've read from Brazilian author Luis Alfredo Garcia Roza. This book is an ambious mix between medical thriller and police story. It starts well with a déjà vu story of a psychatric doctor being harrassed professionally and personnally by one of his enigmatic patient.
Then, the story stagnates with one event happening during each of the 3 parts of the novel, keeping the intrigue alive until the end, but I was disappointed after all the hesitation whether this is a medical thriller or crime novel just like the police officers involved in the case. The pace of the story was slow and still throughout the book causing me to be bored.
The characters of the doctor and his family were not developed enough to get us interested in them. We don't know much of their past, but only know them with the beguinning of the story and their subsequent tragic future. Only the character of the main inspector involved in the case is well developed, but he's not central to the story as he acts more like a witness to the story than a main person active in the development of the intrigue.
It is an okay book with a good beguinning, but needs a lot more work to be a great book.
This was an interesting book (Pursuit in the English translation) but not a traditional mystery. It takes place in Rio de Janeiro and is a psychological game between a psychiatrist and a police detective. You’re not always sure if you’re getting a real story or not. Good depiction of life in Rio neighborhoods.
The beginning of the book was so promising, I thought this was gonna be the best thriller ever... I had no clue about where the author wanted to take me and I love that.
However, it turned out that the writing was rather weak (although this may be due to the translation of the text) and worst of all, the story got a bit messy. The end was rather disappointing, as I had expected something much more awesome than that...
All in all, I think this was aan ok book, because I read it quickly and I was eager to read it to the end. But the end was quite bad. Pitty.
