Touring with Mr Darcy: A Pride and Prejudice Variation

Rate this book
After five proposals from unsuitable men, Elizabeth Bennet was determined to make her own way in the world. She had no wish to be a burden to her family or ever to marry. But her desire for independence had brought her to this, trapped and in need of rescue in the Tyrolean Alps and awaiting the arrival of her knight in shining armour.
Elizabeth had taken the position of companion to Lady Portashall-Pilling and was accompanying her and her son, Lord Pilling, on a tour to the Italian Peninsula. She was mortified when her knight turned out to be, of all the men on the Continent, Mr rotten Darcy! That hateful man who had ruined her sister’s life. Mr Darcy, for some reason, kept popping into her mind. And now! He had popped up in the Alps. Well - she knew one thing about him, he certainly looked a strong young gentleman. Hopefully he would have the strength to rescue her from the life-threatening situation she found herself in. Or would he?
Mr Darcy arrived in the small Tyrolean village to find that he was immediately sent out to search for the lost Miss Elizabeth Bennet. The thought tormented him as he set out towards the hills. After the lady had refused his offer of marriage, he had spent three lonely years travelling, from coast to coast and across the sea, to rid his thoughts of that woman. A tour to the Italian Peninsula with his sister and cousin Anne would free his thoughts of Miss Bennet and her caustic assessment of him. But when he finally discovered her, he was horrified to see that she was hovering on the edge of certain injury or worse. He had to put his mind and strength into rescuing her before she fell and be forever lost to him. There was no time for recriminations or any thought other than the one burning through his mind. He must bring her to safety.
Lady Polly, having known Mr Darcy for years, decided that the two parties should travel onwards together. Elizabeth had no say in the matter, nor did Mr Darcy. His sister and cousin were thrilled to find Elizabeth Bennet was also travelling to the Italian Peninsula. So, the two parties journeyed onward, to find a touch of romance, a little angst and some humour along the way.

This story needs a lot of editing.

Elizabeth decides that with her need for independence she will never marry and so she accepts the position as companion to a Lady Portashall-Pilling whose son, Giles, is a business contact of Mr Gardiner. The lady has decided to tour Italy and takes both Elizabeth and Giles with her. There, in the town of Tyrol, they meet up with Darcy who has his sister and cousin, Anne, de Bourgh, with him. His first meeting with Elizabeth has to do with him rescuing her.

Most of the rest of the story has to do with the two parties traveling in Italy. Darcy has some teasing conversations with Elizabeth and also helps nurse her back from a bad spell of sea sickness during part of their journeys. Anne de Bourgh finds romance. Wickham show up and we learn he is a widower but is again looking to marry. He presents a problem for Darcy's relationship with E. when she learns that Wickham is sending Georgiana forbidden notes.

Darcy is persistent and Elizabeth calls him on his behavior. There is an epilogue which jumps decades ahead and then back to the time of this story.

For me this story not only dragged but with all the errors, kept interrupting my train of thought in following the action.

Interesting premise

After the disastrous proposal at Hunsford Parsonage, Darcy writes his letter of explanation, but is unable to find Elizabeth. Therefore, she never receives it, and goes home still hating Darcy for hurting Jane. Three years later, Elizabeth decides to become a companion to Lady Polly Portashall-Pilling, who is journeying to tour Italy, also accompanied by her son, Giles. Meanwhile, Darcy also is about to journey to Italy accompanied by Georgiana and Anne Debourgh. By some twist of fate, their two parties are staying in the same town, at the same inn. Darcy's reunion with Elizabeth is a drama filled episode that forces them both to interact in a most forceful way.

I wanted to like this book much more than I actually did. However, I was disappointed with the crazy amount of coincidences. The number of extremely contrived situations just made the book fall flat for me. Then, to add to that let down, the author has decided to recycle the villain from the original P&P. I expected that, since the main characters were all far removed from their original locations, that a new and fresh source of angst and conflict would be created. Instead, in probably the most contrived coincidence of all, the villain we all love to hate happens to show up in Italy. It just made me groan and scratch my head in wonder at the stupidity of it all.

Thankfully, the author gives us a very romantic, if out of character, Darcy. As per usual, Darcy has never forgotten Elizabeth, but Elizabeth takes a lot more convincing. The interplay between them is cute and endearing, which somewhat saved the book for me. However, the book desperately needs some good editing. The number of errors is too great to ignore. I recommend this book with a lot of reservations.

Darcy meets Lizzie in the Alps

Almost a really good story. Both Darcy and Lizzie make efforts to improvement of their anger management but Darcy is still going one step forward and then a half a step backward. I didn’t like the HEA. I felt that if the story took place now, they would have got married had a couple of kids but would have divorced three years later.

Light and picturesque

This tale is a lot of fun, presenting a Darcy I never saw before. An entertaining plot taking place on a journey through Europe, with interesting and romantic scenes. An enchanting read.

Interesting and Annoying

This is an interesting variation. Elizabeth decided that at 23, she was tired of waiting for Mr Right. She became a Lady's companion and was on the Continent touring with said Lady. Unfortunately, on a walk, she fell into a ravine, and needed to be rescued. Enter Mr Darcy and things should have progressed at least somewhat smoothly from there. Right?

Of course not! That is part of the annoying part. There are many twists and turns to keep things interesting, but sometimes these turns are just stupid! And the deficiency of the editing makes it even more tedious.

Glad I finished it and can return it. Moving on!

After three years, neither Fitzwilliam Darcy nor Elizabeth Bennet have forgotten each other.

Try as he might, Fitzwilliam Darcy has not been able to banish Miss Elizabeth from his heart or thoughts. They encounter one another more than one thousand miles away from England. Miss Elizabeth has become a companion to a widow, the" Lady Polly " and one or her twin sons, well known to Darcy. Darcy is traveling with his sister, Georgiana, and his cousin Anne Debourghe. Darcy is pressed into service to rescue Lady Polly's missing companion , Miss Bennet. Not knowing whether it is his Elizabeth Bennet or another Miss Bennet, he sets out to find her. Of course, she is the one who refused him and the one he has been trying to forget. From there, the "dance" begins,1,2,3 together, then 1,2,3 apart. This was a wonderful story. Enjoy!

Bellissimo, dolcissimo, simpaticissimo, coraggiosissimo.... Insomma é Mr. Darcy, praticamente perfetto.

I loved it!

A romantic story well written. Loved the travel element & the ups & downs of Mr Darcy & Elizabeth’s relationship. Had my heart racing, had me gasping in shock, but most of all it had me smiling and laughing throughout. A very enticing read, I couldn’t put it down. A very different variation from the beloved classic but still just as enjoyable, despite the mixed reviews.

Drawn out and Clunky

The characters in this story are shallow and irritating. The book could be condensed. It is a collection of the use of extending the story through untimely interruptions, misunderstandings, etc. Couldn't really get into it. Should have read the three star reviews.

Rescue? What Rescue?

This is one of the best stories I have read! it is intriguing because the characters are very different and pleasant. For a change, Ann of Roslings is a normal mortal and she and Georgiana are best friends and their behavior is quite enjoyable. It was a good different story that keeps you reading and guessing.
