This is the earlier edition of the diary, from 1962. Later, in 1971, a "Complete" edition was published, with 36 additonal pages from the original diary (188 pp vs 118 in the printed edition). Editor Healy at the end of his Preface here shares that those pages "...have been omitted, most of them because they lacked interest, the rest because they were libellous or otherwise offensive." Unlike "My Brother's Keeper", a later in life memoir, this is the actual diary of brother Stanislaus at age 20. Editor Healy refers to it as "callow". It is the work of a 20 year old, and can be a tedious churn to get through at times. As in "Keeper" we get his hatred for his father, and his great admiration for his older brother, even while disagreeing with him, and being jealous of him as well. And his crush on 14 year old first cousin Katsy. Of some interest is his longish section on James vs Meredith. Despite not having a long formal education, Stanislaus went on to become a professor. The writing of a 20 year old, but it does get better the more he writes. And some examples of his own attempts at "creative" writing - rather Impressionistic impressions of walking the streets of Dublin. But also some "self-flagellation" in it, about why does he write it, what a hypocrite he is, he's an idiot -he's a genius! Etc etc etc. Tedious and does not add that much understanding to James Joyce and his writing.
