“The ChatGPT-4 Codex: A Fiction Writer's Companion,” author Zane Wilder’s ambitious new “how-to” effort on how fiction authors can credibly utilize AI to create fiction, is difficult to review, and even more difficult to rate. The book is herculean in its comprehensiveness, and that can’t be ignored. Offsetting that fact, however, is the author’s decision to even write this book and then make sweeping assertions, including his position equating artificial intelligence with a writer’s muse.
He writes: “Many a famous author has proudly paid homage to their muse, but what happens when the writing journey is shared with artificial intelligence instead of a traditional, inspiring, and wise human? The ChatGPT-4 Codex is a meditation on this question, and the message it carries is that the synthesis of AI with human thought does not replace the human element, it amplifies it. By partnering with AI you make a vast array of narrative pathways available that in breadth and depth were previously inaccessible to the average independent author and publisher of fiction.”
To his credit, he does address whether all of this is a form of creativity, or merely mimicry. “The Codex doesn’t shy away from these complex questions. Instead, it embraces them, proposing that the emergence of AI in writing is akin to the advent of a new genre, one that melds human emotion with computational power.”
Wilder also predicts that, within two years, “most authors will consider it essential to have the knowledge and skill to integrate tools and software with AI such as ChatGPT-4. Tools such as these perhaps powered by AI not only enhance your writing experience but also offer a multitude of ways to optimize your research, note-taking, and organizational processes, constituting a comprehensive writing toolkit that until very recently was unavailable to those without access to a team of experts.”
These assertions were off-putting to me, at the very least. As was the dialogue section, where he writes “you can use ChatGPT-4 to generate dialogue in the style of popular authors like Gillian Flynn, Toni Morrison, and Ernest Hemingway.” And why not, as these styles contain “winning elements.” So, he says, you can write dialogue and then feed it to the AI and have it modified in the style of [insert your favored authors]. The second option is to give the AI a description of your scene and a brief description of the character’s speaking, then task it with writing the dialogue in the style of [insert[…] author or authors.
Writing a novel shouldn’t be for everyone, just as painting or sculpting shouldn’t be for everyone.
In this book, Wilder decided to be an advocate for using AI to write fiction. He simply could have written a book with AI and not attempted to influence our points of view. I think that was the wrong choice. So I stopped reading and immediately went back to my latest work in progress.

I have never been one to read instruction manuals or teaching content. However, the age of AI is not approaching anymore, but rather it’s here, and it’s here to stay. This new and eye-opening manual provides a formula for writers to expand their knowledge and possibilities by demonstrating how we can all seize technology and utilise CHAT-GPT4 to its full potential. This was the most informative and interesting piece of writing that I have read in a while. Something so familiar, but still foreign, as AI became a novelty I suddenly wished to explore. This will surely enhance my own writing and get me out of a slump.

The book is not just a guide; it's a master class. The only time I put the book down was to turn to my computer and try out a new prompt on my own sci-fi creation. I never would have learned the techniques in the book on my own. It exposes and reveals the capabilities of CHAT-GPT 4.0 that are amazing. It opened up a whole new way of looking at AI-assisted literary writing. Highly recommend.

I dont remember when was the last time I was reading a book and trying its steps on computer simultaneously. A very interesting approach to book writing. A must try for all the writers out there for a twist on their book writing :).
