Orphaned by a raid on his village, Aska was captured and sold into slavery. Losing his voice and subjected to hard work, a life of hardship began for the young Norseman. However the Gods were not done with his fate and while the mute boy grows into an adult, an opportunity presents itself. An opportunity for revenge. Thrown into a new life once more, Aska will have to fight and earn his place in a world where failure means death.
Fans of the TV series Vikings and The Lost Kingdom will enjoy this action-packed historical fiction! I was really surprised at how the story reads, it feels like a movie. The pacing is super well done and I found myself intrigued the entire time wondering what would happen next.
We follow the story of Aska, who’s orphaned as a young boy after a raid attack on his village. He is sold into slavery and endures a challenging life. I found it even more curious that he had become a mute after his traumatic experience, and was curious what path his story would lead. It was captivating to watch his development from a young timid mute boy into a grown strong warrior. The story is filled with battles, adventure, sorrow, hardships and even friendship.
Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy for review!
Wonderful characters as we follow the story of a young boy, captured by bandits and sold into slavery, first to a land holder then to a Warrior. Askha faces many challenges as he navigates the life of warrior and it is in this he finds himself and a family. A story filled with nail biting moments and strange creatures to be overcome.
A very satisfying read for a new author. An engaging journey across the time and land of the Vikings. The characters aren't based no clichés seen oh so many times in these types of settings, on the contrary we do feel the author has made extensive research to avoid the main tropes and present to us his world and characters, setting them apart from those who might have come before them. The story is easy to read and to understand, with a great mix between grounded reality and fantastic mythology. There's no shyness about the gruesome realities of the lives of the Vikings and yet there is also a poetry in its most beautiful aspects that every reader can enjoy.
All in all a very well accomplished first book that I strongly advise you to read. I can say I am looking forward to the next works of the author whenever he decides to release them to the public.
Aska is an amazing character. As a mute, he literally says nothing the entire book, but I had no issues connecting with him at all. The emotions he felt clearly came through and I felt I was traveling right alongside him during his journey. I loved watching him grow and mature, and the end just filled me with hope for his future.
An excellent read!
Thank you Voracious Readers and Timothy Terra for my copy! I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. All above thoughts and opinions are my own.
I was wondering what to expect with this being the author's debut, but I was blown away! We follow Aska's story and you can't help but feel sympathy for him and often put yourself in his shoes in the moments of decision and action. The story flows seamlessly and there are often moments where you're on the edge of your seat when the tension is high, wodering who will come out on top. A perfect read for someone who is into Viking/fantasy settings and Norse mythology!
Aska is an amazing work. Normally, I’m more into high-fantasy or sci-fi, but the world-building of this book is very well built and I love how the seidr (viking magic) is shown. All characters feel very alive and aren’t reduced to simple clichés. Every time I read the book, I never feel bored and surprise myself by reading more pages than I thought I would. Keep up the good work. I’ll be waiting for the sequel.
He is mute and his life changed when his village was raided and taken as a slave. His life is not going to be easy but the gods have other plans for the young boy. As he grows he gets stronger and soon a chance of revenge comes to him. Will he take it? Will he get his revenge? See how he gets on
A very likeable story. You can't help but like the main characters and cheer for them; Aska especially. Lots of fighting, some humour and romance make for a good book. I recommend. This book was received from the author through Voracious Readers Only.
I really enjoyed reading this book that combines mythology, history and fantasy. It was beautifully written and the story was amazing! I just couldn’t stop reading! I 100% recommend it 🤩
