A one-of-a-kind picture book, (and publisher), that was written by a 5-year-old author, in English, his 2nd language. It features the work of a talented young Mexican artist, whose black & white images capture the spirit of Halloween.
Guys, this is such a cute little story, I love it. It was written by a 5 year old and is really short but adorable. de la Fuenta's black and white illustrations only take up a small portion of the page and are simple but with enough detail that they really pop.
I also recommend using the "look inside" feature at Amazon. Alberto's story may be short, but it's funny:
And I heard some steps. I was scared. It was a Vampire! Or not. A mummy! Or not.
Each of the above lines is printed on it's own page with an accompanying illustration. Except for "Or not". Each of those words are centered on a single page. (I know I said it was short, but that's not the entire story.) Most of my first graders can read this story and get a kick out of it. It's a wonderful opportunity for your child to read to you. (That's a very empowering experience for kids.) The text is large and centered on each page. Kids are also pretty impressed that Alberto wrote the story in English (his second language) at the age of five.
Verdict: Such a sweet book, and a nice one for first grade readers. Kids enjoy seasonal stories, so pick it up and share it with your family. It is hard to find, but hopefully your local or school library will have a copy. I'm giving it 4 stars - it's a simple story, but I think it can be a nice experience for your family.
My favorite Halloween book! What can be better than a children's book written by a child? Definitely connects with younglings better than any other story. LOVE LOVE LOVE 10/10 would recommend. Also, motivates your child to write and create themselves.
My absolute favorite children’s book. A short and sweet story written by a five year old in his second language. The illustrations are very cute and simple. I love it.
