This book absolutely gutted me. It's emotional, beautiful, and so powerful. As a mother, so much of the story resonated with me, however, I really think this novel would strike a chord with anyone who has love and lost.
The romance between Sunny and Mathew was so sweet and pure. I loved that they were perfect for each other but also that they felt so real and human - they were perfectly imperfect! Their excitement and love for their unborn child was incredibly genuine and often hard to read knowing how things played out for them.
The loss of a child is so profound and is truly unfathomable and England did a tremendous job translating that grief to the written word. She also did an exceptional job of conveying their eagerness (and trepidation!) at becoming new parents.
I appreciated how the novel was laid out with present day and Sunny and Mathew's suffering to start followed by the bulk of the novel focusing on Sunny's pregnancy and their excitement over their impending bundle of joy. The novel then ends back in present day and how Sunny and Mathew are coping and learning to live with their grief. Interspersed throughout the novel are letters written to the unborn baby in real time with the novel. Again, these letters were moving and sweet and carried so much hope.
This novel really is beautiful. The hope and promise of a new life is always such a blessing and you could really feel the Ellis family's emotion through the pages. While also tremendously sad and gutting, I appreciated that most of the novel did not focus on the horror of losing a child and focused more importantly on the themes of hope and love.
This is a beautifully written novel that will definitely stick with me. Thank you to Suzy England for the copy.
Heartbreakingly beautiful! Sunny and Mathew are a couple very much in love who have just married and who have just found out that they are expecting a baby. In the excitement of planning and preparing and fixing up the nursery and choosing names, Sunny and Mathew compose letters to their unborn child. I thought the letters were a brilliant way to help tell the story.
One of my favorite things about this is that the secondary characters were just as memorable as Mathew and Sunny. Huck, Leo, and Ivy the dog (named after the author's beloved pup who passed away) will all find their way into your heart!
Suzy England spoke with my Zoom book club about this novel and it was a fascinating discussion. She had someone who had lost a baby read it first as a "sensitivity reader" and it was plain to see that Suzy wrote this with a lot of respect and compassion. Even though this story is very heavy and emotional, Suzy was very upbeat and fun to listen to. Would highly recommend having Suzy visit your book club!
Letters for Lucien is a beautifully written, soulful book. Matthew and Sunny are complex, fully-developed characters whose emotions are raw and honest. Their love is deep, their grief is heart-wrenching, and their journey is difficult but hopeful. The letters to Lucien are a beautiful addition, adding another layer of emotion to a novel that is bursting with feeling.
Letters for Lucien is a deeply moving, timeless exploration of the exhilaration and anticipation of welcoming a new life into the world juxtaposed with the shattering loss of life, and the power of love to pull one from the depths of despair. Remarkably well done.
Pregnancy loss is so prevalent yet so rarely talked about. Letters for Lucien is a testament to the grief both shared and experienced individually by a couple experiencing their worst nightmare. Definitely not an easy read but a story our mothers, sisters, and friends may unfortunately share.
I loved this amazing quote, no truer words exist in my opinion.
"There really are places in the heart you don't even know exist until you love a child" -Anne Lamott
Some authors tell you Better authors show you And then there is Suzy Suzy immerses you
The emotions felt while reading this book were intense. There was an almost instant connection to the characters. I could feel their joy, their heartbreak, their immense grief.
This is hard book to read as it deals with the loss of a child. You know this going in, but you get swept up by the story which is filled with hope, love and joy. You completely get swept up in the story and before you know it, tears are streaming down your face.
The story is so well written, I loved the vulnerability of the characters as they shared their most raw feelings via letters. It was a creative way to really help the reader get to know each and every character.
This is a story of love, so many types of love. Although it's heartbreaking, it's also hopeful.
This family will stay with me, in my mind and heart, forever.
Though heartbreaking and emotional and honestly, not an easy read, this book about the loss of a child is beautifully written. England’s characters felt so genuine in their relationship, on their own, coping with their loss and the hope. There are letters written to the unborn child throughout the story mixed in through past and present time. Mostly this book is about love and hope. Just Beautiful
Matthew and Sunny are newlyweds. They discovered each other later in life. So, when Sunny becomes pregnant, they knew there were a few risks. But, when tragedy hits, they each handle their grief differently.
Now, this may need a trigger warning for some people. This is about the loss of a child, specifically a baby. But y’all, I could not stop reading it. It is tragic and grief stricken but it is so full of love and emotion.
I felt so close to Matthew and Sunny as they each wrote letters to their child, Lucien. This is why their heartbreak was so intense for me. I literally had to put the book down to catch my breath. I honestly still think about this book and the tragedy surrounding their grief. I love how the author showcases the father’s grief as well as the mother’s. Very well done!

I received this novel from the author for a honest review.
A beautiful, heartbreaking novel about life, love, and loss, and the fortitude of two souls finding their way back to one another.
This story curled around my heart, shattered it, and stitched it back together. Losing a child is incomprehensible, and Suzy’s novel treats the subject so respectfully that her story will stay with me forever.
Amongst the loss is also so much love. The letters the main characters, Matthew and Sunny Ellis, write to baby Lucien pre-birth were so beautiful and vibrant that I wish I would’ve written more letters to my own children in the womb. I also loved the supporting father figures in the book and found family theme. Highly recommend!
This book destroyed me before rebuilding me with hope, laughter, and a genuine love for both Sunny and Matthew. By opening the novel with the love and bright hope of a coming child, Suzy England drew me in to this layered and heart-wrenching story. Page by page, I rooted for Sunny to come back from her devastating loss, for Matthew to reach her and be able to grieve the loss of their precious boy with her, for them to come together as a family, united through their love and strength. Paragraph after paragraph, I was not disappointed. This portrayal, so amazingly crafted, carries the reader with Sunny and Matthew on the worst journey a parent can travel. With them, I sighed, I ugly cried, I laughed, and I felt that bright bubble of hope as they climbed through that dark abyss together. Chapters, which vacillated between past and present, the joy of the pregnancy, the grief of the loss, and the poignant letters written to their unborn son, kept my emotions on a rollercoaster throughout the novel. Along with the fabulous character development that made me love Sunny and Matthew, who are perfect together in their imperfectness, I couldn't put this novel down. In fact, since I got an early copy, I had to read it twice to make sure I didn't miss anything, and it was just as captivating the second time through.
Oh, my heart! This is such an emotional story about a couple that must bear the intense grief of burying their newborn son.
Mathew and Sunny are newlyweds who found love a bit later in life. Soon, they are delighted to discover a baby is on the way. Unbeknownst to each other, Sunny and Mathew write letters to their little prince.
But, at birth, complications arise, and they lose their prince. Although both are devastated, Sunny sinks into a dark place, and Mathew fears he is now losing his beautiful and cherished wife, too. Mathew yearns for them to cling to each other in this time of grief, but Sunny is drifting further away.
While it is a story of grief and loss, I love that we get moments from their blossoming love story, and much of the focus is on their love for one another. All the letters help us understand these characters' hearts so well. Some wonderful secondary characters add even more warmth and love to this story.
Because of the heartbreaking subject, it may be especially hard for those who have walked this journey. While full of honest, raw, and painful emotions, the author does a beautiful job of showing there can be hope and healing.

CW: please please please check the CW for this book before reading. It’s outstanding, but so so heavy.
This is such a powerful story, that everyone needs to read in this lifetime. So many of us have never ever experienced the contents of this book, but I can promise you it’s every mother’s worst fear. Suzy England’s poignant prose is phenomenal, it brings you directly into the story and immerses you in the pain and struggles of her characters. This book will shed light onto the darkest parts of being a wife, mother, husband, father, family member and friend of someone who has experienced such a profound loss. I could see every landscape her characters walked through, I could feel the gut wrenching pain, and felt so strengthened by the love written into this story. The unique way this story was written, starting in the present day then going back in time, working its way back to the present was so well thought out. The inclusion of letters from each of the characters is extremely cathartic and truly made this book fly to a 5 star read for me. Suzy England is one to watch, and. I cannot wait to experience her next stories.
This is a quick read that stirs up lots of emotions. The book is written with the use of a narrative and through letters written.
The book emits the strong emotions of love and loss as a couple, Matthew and Sunny, go through excitement, nervousness, and grief after an unexpected pregnancy ends in tragedy.
The most powerful parts of the book in my opinion are the letters not only written by Matthew and Sunny, but the letters that Sunny’s Dad and Uncle Leo (the man that is a father figure to Mathew) compose. Each letter extends the emotions of feelings that these individuals have for each other and the unborn baby boy, Lucien.
The other part of the story is the love that Matthew and Sunny have for each other and the hopelessness Matthew feels as Sunny has descended into a dark place after the loss.
I didn’t cry like I thought I might after reading the book description because I think the whole journey of family and love was uplifting even during the emotional devastating parts.
This book is heart wrenching. I am not a mother and have never been pregnant so I cannot even imagine what this couple went through. Losing a child. It starts with the loss, then flashes back to Sunny’s pregnancy and her and Matt’s relationship. Throughout her pregnancy, they both write letters to their child. Heartfelt letters with both everyday moments and words of wisdom. The letters are beautiful and emotional.
I loved the relationship between the two and how that built and grew. The moments of bliss and the moments of doubt. Really showcasing how relationships work.
The bliss and anticipation as one is expecting and the utter devastation in one life shattering moment. My heart broke for the two.
It drew me in and broke my heart. And I didn’t even mind a little crying.
The characters in this book are on such a tough journey, one that everyone hopes they'll never experience. It's a tough read in parts because it has to do with the loss of a child at birth, but it's also a novel that holds the door open for hope and improvement in the future.
Loss of an infant isn't something that is widely talked about although it is a sad fact of life and Letters to Lucien examines so many parts of this type of heartbreaking journey. Whether you've been where Mathew and Sunny have been or knew someone who has been there, this is a read that will maybe help readers understand that we all grieve in our own way and our own time and that hope is there - you just have to get to a place where you can reach for it.
This is my first book by this author, but I'll definitely read more in future.
Letters for Lucien by Suzy England is a beautifully written novel about love, loss, grief and strength.
This is a heartbreaking story about losing a child. The author does a fantastic job at treating the topic with the respect and love it deserves, but in a very honest way.
Matthew and Sunny are such complex, fleshed out characters. The "letters" are a unique character themselves. They are written to little baby Lucien before he was born.
The secondary characters are anything but secondary. These supporting figures really add to the incredible dynamics of the story.
A wonderful novel that I am sure to remember for a very long time.
This book is beautiful and heart wrenching. It took me a while to write this review because I was completely immersed, and I needed time to process my emotions. As a mother, my greatest fear would be to lose a child. Even though I felt gutted, raw and cried a lot, hope was always there. Through the letters, the author does amazing job of not completely focusing on all the negative, but allows for healing with hope, love and happiness to re-enter the characters lives. I highly recommend, but this book may not be for everyone.
Oh wow, what a story, not an easy read for sure, I can’t imagine the pain after losing a child but this story was both gut-wrenching and heart-warming it was impossible to stop reading. It was simply beautiful!

Letters For Lucien by Author Suzy England releases January 15, 2024.
It feels wrong to use this word because it’s such a serious book, but Letters for Lucien is so beautifully written. It is not only Mathew and Sunny’s love story, but their story of finding each other again after a horrific tragedy.
Woven throughout the book are letters written to Lucien. Such beautiful and emotional letters. From Mathew, Sunny, and Huck.
Please read the CW before reading. Your emotional and mental health is important!!
This one broke my heart but I loved it from beginning to end. A book based on letters written to a baby not yet born is such a lovely idea and I loved reading the letters from all the adults that cherished Lucien. I’ve always enjoyed reading and writing letters even though it’s mostly a thing of the past at this point. Mathew and Sunny had such beautiful love story. The Houston setting was an added bonus for this reader who has lived in Texas most of her adult life.
Life. Love. Loss. Be still my heart, for it has been on a devastating but beautiful ride. I'm not equipped to put into words the heartbreaking saga that was endured or the impact the story left on my soul. It is beautiful, at the same time, devastating. It is a shattered dream dipped in hope. It is a must read.
Why it this review so short? The author has done a far better job of writing it than I could ever express.
Superb!!! Suzy really takes you on an emotional rollercoaster in this story of true love and immeasurable loss. The lead characters of Sunny and Matthew are a couple desperately in love who's relationship is tested to the max when they suffer the nightmare of any parent to be. There are also some great moments of humour throughout the book. Another brilliant book, Suzy. I look forward to your next one.
This book took me through an emotional journey and I had to put it down for a while. The story is intensely real and beautifully written. Suzy England has perfectly captured the joy and anxiety of pregnancy and sensitively illustrated the grief that follows a tragedy.
If ever you find yourself looking for a gut-wrenching, emotional read, let me suggest Author Suzy England's latest Letter For Lucien. Careful, it might break you.
Wow this was an emotional read. Getting to see how excited they were for this new adventure while knowing the tragedy they go through broke my heart. I loved how Sunny, Mathew, and a couple others were writing letters to show their excitement but also fears about having a baby at the age they did. It felt like they were talking right to the baby. The characters including the supporting characters were well developed. I loved the way the backstories were woven in and how we got to see the before and after the loss. Great read.
Thank you @suzyenglandwrites and @suzyapprovedbooktours for the gifted copy.
Letters for Lucien is one of the most beautifully written novels I have ever read. It’s heart-wrenching, tragic and sad, but we see glimmers of hope too, as the story progresses.
We begin the story as Mathew and Sunny are trying to come to terms with the loss of their new baby. The novel then takes us straight back to the time just before Sunny found herself pregnant and from there, Suzy England takes us on the pregnancy journey through a series of letters written to the unborn child. These letters are so delicately and honestly written, I found myself thinking what a beautiful idea it would be for a child to read something like this as he grew up.
I really enjoyed Letters for Lucien. I loved how the author shows that even in the darkest of days, there will often be a glimmer of light peeking through.
Thank you to Suzy England for the opportunity to read and review Letters for Lucien.
