The Little Book of Sanuk: The Thai Secret to a More Joyful Life

Rate this book
We all need a little more sanuk in our lives

Sanuk is a Thai concept that can loosely be translated as meaning ‘fun’. Though sanuk is in fact much more than that; it’s about achieving pleasure and joy in all aspects of life. For Thai people, if it’s not sanuk, it’s not worth doing.

Thai people believe that it’s the little things that add up to a joyful life. Whether it’s raising happy kids, enjoying a quick chat with your neighbour or having a laugh with friends, they try to bring a sense of joy into their daily routines. This easygoing, fun-loving way of life is why Thailand is often called The Land of Smiles.

But how can we learn to prioritise this sense of fun and pleasure in our own lives? With recent clinical studies showing a clear link between a person’s outlook on life and their health, a mindset of optimism and positivity has obvious benefits. Being a glass half full kind of person doesn’t just help us live longer, it helps us live better.

Embracing sanuk and approaching life a glass-half-full attitude can make you happier, healthier and more productive – and this book will show you how.

THE LITTLE BOOK OF SANUK: The Thai Secret to a More Joyful Life
Author: Karen Sinotok
Genre: Non Fiction
Moods: Reflective, Informative
Pace: Fast

“Don’t seize the day. Just tickle its belly” - A Thai proverb

After an unforgettable trip to the Krabi Island in Thailand, I found myself captivated by the warmth and vibrancy of its culture. The experience lingered in my mind, compelling me to explore the Thai way of life further. That’s when I came across The Little Book of Sanuk, a title that immediately intrigued me.

Synopsis:
Sanuk (san-ook)
1. verb Enjoy; be enjoyable; have a good time; be funny
2. adjective Pleasant; funny; fun; entertaining; amusing; vivacious; diverting; enjoyable

“Sanuk” is a Thai concept that can loosely be translated as meaning ‘fun’, though sanuk is, in fact, much more than that – it’s about achieving pleasure, satisfaction and togetherness in all aspects of life. It’s a happier, more optimistic way of living, and it’s something we can all learn to embrace.

Deeply ingrained in Thai culture, sanuk is a guiding principle in Thai people’s day-to-day lives. Everything should be as enjoyable as possible. Nothing is taken too seriously, and anything worth doing should contain some element of sanuk.

Thai people believe that it’s the little things that add up to a joyful life. Whether it’s spending time with friends and family, raising happy children or having a laugh with colleagues, they always try to bring a sense of fun into their daily routines. It’s the easy-going, fun-loving way of life that Thai people strive to lead, and it’s the reason why Thailand is known as the Land of Smiles 😊

Through 10 engaging chapters, Karen Sinotok shares her journey as a British traveler who falls in love with Thailand’s unique lifestyle. She provides personal anecdotes about her experiences, including how she met her husband and gradually embraced sanuk in her own life. Along the way, she highlights how technology often acts as an antithesis to sanuk, emphasizing the importance of digital detoxes to truly experience life’s simple joys.

Beyond just fun, sanuk also fosters resilience. The author illustrates this by recounting the gripping story of Thailand’s extraordinary 2018 cave rescue, where 12 boys and their coach were trapped for two weeks. Despite facing extreme adversity, their ability to remain calm and composed was a testament to the Thai spirit - one that finds strength even in the darkest times.

Remarks:
While The Little Book of Sanuk presents a seemingly simple idea, its message is deeply profound. In a world where people, in the pursuit of happiness get caught up in the cycle of the hedonic treadmill, this book reminds us that joy is found in the little things—laughter, companionship, and an optimistic outlook.

If you’re looking for a quick yet thought-provoking read that offers a refreshing take on happiness, this book is well worth your time.

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

A Sanuk tip:
When we’re having fun, we naturally smile, which encourages the release of serotonin, a neurotransmitter which contributes to our happiness and wellbeing, as well as boosting the immune system.

We all know that when we see someone smiling, we smile back. And that’s not just a social reflex; smiling turns out to be as contagious as yawning. It’s so potent, we may be able to catch one from ourselves by smiling at ourselves in the mirror. Even forcing a fake smile can trick your brain into believing you’re happy which can then spur actual feelings of happiness.
And of course, there’s nothing more international than a smile; it’s a way to communicate when you don’t have the right words.

A quote to note:
“Smile and the world smiles with you” - Stanley Gordon West

Drive made me read it. Cute for what it is, which in my opinion is to be a Thai hostel coffee table/front desk book. Drive did point out that it has really good translation of important cultural phrases/words with nuance that he appreciated(e.g. her explanation for the vibes behind the word sanuk, and how it translates to more than just “happiness” which is how it is translated usually). But obviously I am a mere westerner so cannot comment on that myself

I love to learn from other cultures and this gave a good insight into how life in Thailand encourages a happy, optimistic outlook. One proverb which sums it up is, 'Don't seize the day, just tickle its belly!!

What I liked about the book is how the author explains different concepts and provides suggestions on how to adapt them to different (primarily Western) settings. It was also nice to see different pieces of research being cited to illustrate specific points.

I've visited Thailand many times and always loved the people as much as the beautiful beaches (and food!) This book has gorgeous illustrations and photos and gave me a real insight to why Thais are so full of joy - it's a lot to do with their optimistic attitude and community spirit - something known as 'sanuk'. It's also a well researched look at latest studies on how we can all be happier in modern life. It would make a great gift for any fan of Thailand or anyone thinking about a trip there. I learnt a lot and really enjoyed it.
