Life in a small Irish community brings together a number of characters who weave in and out of each other's lives. A young man training to be a doctor is the main thread and it is he who comes to realise that all is not as it seems at the Captains house. This novel reflects a time in Ireland that shows community at it's best and it's worse. It relates the story of adolescence into adulthood, student to worker and yet again women playing periphery roles. The novel is well written and the nature aspects are appealing.
