I have to admit - I bought this book because it had a preface by Larry Levis. (A preface that ended up being very typical of poetry prefaces and therefore a bit disappointing.)
However, I was given a decent collection of poetry. While I was not blown away often, I felt that much of the collection felt timeless and still had a strong impact.
It is a plain, yet powerful form of language that McAfee uses - and in that I can see certain echoes of Levis. It is these moments that I cling to, but that is not to say that he does not have his own voice. He is not a common echo of Levis.
Perhaps I wanted him to be so that I could continue to be astounded by Levis - a chance that I will not be given again.
But I was given a new voice that I will dive into again. I am interested to see more of what he has written.
