This book is developed from a series of workshops on classroom management conducted by Dr. Delaney Kirk over many years. It provides a toolbox filled with proven classroom management techniques that have been used successfully by faculty in all disciplines. Useful for both new and experienced faculty members wondering how to manage today's college students.
If you teach in a classroom setting, this book is an excellent reference. More of a practical guide than a treatise on pedagogical philosophy, this book contains lots of great advice.
Overall, the book reminded me that I have the right to set my expectations high when it comes to my students. As a community college instructor, it's easy to fall into the trap of adjusting my expectations to the lowest common denominator. Delaney Kirk reminded me that I don't have to put up with disruptive student behaviors.
This book is an easy read. In fact, it's a great book just to thumb through, reading the many war stories from both professors and students. In reading about the struggles of other professors, I felt a kind of camaraderie with my colleagues who wrestle with the same sorts of issues that I do. In the end, Delaney Kirk reminds us that teaching, although rewarding, can get messy at times. Knowing this, one can approach the messiness with grace and even some compassion.
