A children's medieval adventure novel for ages 9-12. After 7 years enslaved in a hen house, can a beak-nosed, chicken-talking orphan boy fly the coop, avoiding a beheading, return the lost wink and win the love of a princess?
Sometimes the right book comes along at the right time. This is a kid's story, written with real colour, panache and verve, complete with gory bits and unkindness, but with sprinklings of delightful and unexpected humour, and a satisfying ending, just like the fairy tales of old.
I felt that this book had its origins in the oral tradition, perhaps as a story at bedtime; and I could hear Schneider reading this aloud, relishing every turn of events and each juicy phrase.
It has a moral too, which seemed to me to be delivered right to my heart at the perfect moment... when bad things happen, good things are sure to follow. Roscoe, who is unfailingly cheerful and forgiving, seems like a good role model for our lives. I am delighted that in the end, his kindness comes to help him win the day.
Unreservedly, I recommend this story, which will bring life and love to even the most jaded palate.
