The disciplines of science, philosophy, and religion are full of theories put forth by men attempting to explain, or explain away, the fundamental flaws of humanity. But the problem with man is best explained by His Creator. If we as creatures are to find a remedy for our plight, we must seek it in God, who alone can save. Through a guided study of God's own words, and under various systematic headings, The Truth about Man unfolds the desperate condition of humanity. As the second part in a series of rich, biblical studies, this workbook provides the reader with a no-nonsense Bible study on a fundamental tenant of the Christian gospel the lost condition of man. Like the previous book, The One True God, this workbook keeps the student engaged directly with the Bible throughout the entire study. It is intended not just to teach truth, but to lead to an encounter with the living God and a deeper understanding of the magnitude of our salvation by demonstrating man's true need of God's redemption. In this study students are encouraged to thoughtfully draw conclusions from the Scriptures rather than to merely absorb the principles, inferences, and illustrations set before them by the author. For this reason the book includes very little of such material and instead focuses on digesting the Scriptures directly. Learning in this way, the reader is set on a firm foundation and will readily perceive the centrality and high authority of biblical doctrine within the Christian life. The study of doctrine is both an intellectual and devotional discipline. Therefore students are encouraged throughout the study to think through and apply the truths they learn, meditating on the demands of Scripture for their heart and mind. The book puts us squarely in the middle of the material and requires we give searching thought to God's assertions about man. The Truth about Man is especially suited for the following (1) doctrinal training for new converts, (2) college and adult group Bible studies, (3) private study, (4) Christian or home school curriculum, (5) Sunday school material, (6) an aid to parents in teaching the Word of God to their children.
Paul David Washer became a believer while studying at the University of Texas. He completed his undergraduate studies and enrolled at Southwestern Theological Seminary, where he received his Master of Divinity degree. After graduating, he moved to Peru and served there as a missionary.
Paul ministered as a missionary in Peru for 10 years, during which time he founded the HeartCry Missionary Society to support Peruvian church planters. HeartCry's work now supports over 165 indigenous missionaries in over 26 countries throughout Eastern Europe, South America, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.
Paul now serves as one of the laborers with the HeartCry Missionary Society (www.heartcrymissionary.com). He and his wife Charo have three children: Ian, Evan, and Rowan.
The book was more on Bible study format. You need to read a lot of verses here by opening your own Bible. The book was focused on the doctrine of man, The Fall and the consequences afterwards.
As you go through this study you learn about the total depravity of mankind trough the Scriptures and you are almost left in utter despair as you study the nature of man. It really isn't until the last few pages that you finally see the hope that there is in Christ and what a glorious thing that is to see after seeing so dark a picture (dark but still accurate) of the sinfulness of man!
In my opinion the study itself takes quite a while to go through because it is very repetitive. I noticed that in the beginning my answers to questions were more detailed but as I came across similar questions I would find myself writing the same thing, so I became less detailed and just wrote what the scriptures said. This is good in the sense that it engraves a truth into your mind and I think repeatedly writing something helps you remember it, but I think many of the questions could have been combined.
I needed to know how much I was in need of a Savior. I’ve been a Christian for 30 years, but always thought of myself as a “good person”. No one who sees themselves that way can appreciate the gravity of their situation and the immeasurable grace of God in Christ Jesus. I’m so grateful to have found this book. And grateful beyond words that God saved me from the consequences of my sin.
