Great summary of Custer’s Civil War career as well as his actions during the Gettysburg campaign. Phipps successfully argues that without his success at Gettysburg, Custer’s star may not have risen as high and his death would not be as mythic.

A reasonably balanced review of Custer at Gettysburg. A nice survey of his early career to set the stage, with an afterword covering his denouement. The coverage of the operations of the Gettysburg campaign are well done. The tactics of the East Cavalry field battle are recounted in great detail, there are sufficient maps, but I think they could have been better done.
