Bound by a blood oath and harboring a deadly secret, she's out of time.
Avarielle Grayloft has survived two wars, the loss of family, and a battle against an ancient god. Her magical blade has sliced through monsters and gods alike, and she's no stranger to the tang of her own blood. But that blood runs cold when monsters return to her land after twenty years of peace.
Desperate to protect her son and her home, Avarielle reaches out to old allies for the most powerful queen in Graydon, and its highest-ranking sorceress. Together, the three women defeated the monsters once before, and Avarielle hopes they can do so again.
But Avarielle and her allies are not who they once were. The price they paid for their power was steep, and now they are linked by a dark secret forged in the blood of a god…a secret so deadly that it could shatter their world. And them.
Will their remaining magic be enough to stop the return of evil? Or has too much time passed and too much of their power already been lost?
Twenty years ago, they became legends by saving the lands. But their actions had consequences far beyond the battlefield, and now it's time to pay the price for their victory.
This series takes place twenty years after Heirs of a Broken Land and features some of the same characters, but you can easily enter the lands of Graydon and Elihor via this series. Follow your reading heart!
What people have said about Heirs of a Broken Land:
"From the first page, this tale grabbed me. Cassara and everyone she met came alive on the pages, and I couldn't stop turning them. And found myself thoroughly enjoying a tale told with humour despite its dark moments, with twists and turns that kept me reading long after bedtime. And kept bringing me to a halt to re-read moments that bit hard, and took my breath away. Remember that when you get to the end, and know that there are sequels. You're going to love this book." -- Ed Greenwood Internationally-bestselling author of SPELLFIRE and creator of The Forgotten Realms®
"…having such a wonderful read with such a great ending means I can wholeheartedly tell everyone that you should definitely, absolutely and without question read all three books in the Heirs of Broken Land series. […] All in all, a perfect fantasy adventure!" --Sequential Tart
"This is the fantasy epic I've been waiting for, with original magic, found family, and fully-realized, powerful female characters. That it's fast-paced yet breathes wonder in every setting is a fit tribute to Bilodeau's strengths as a writer. Highly Recommended. (I cannot wait for the next in the series.)" -- Julie Czerneda, author of "The Gossamer Mage"

I loved the characters in this book. Older, (more) mature women who had adventures and saved the world in the past and are now called on to do it again. The perspective of heroes that have now grown into adults and have families was refreshing and the extra dynamic of bringing in their now (almost) adult children added a great complexity.
I haven't read the earlier series set in this world but after finishing this book, I want to go back and read it to get to know the characters when they were younger, and to dive deeper into this world. The characters are compelling and flawed and I appreciated the depth of their personalities.
The cliffhanger ending is great and I am looking forward to the next one.
Having read and thoroughly enjoyed the previous series in this setting, I knew to expect strong female characters and also to expect the unexpected. Marie Bilodeau is an excellent writer and a very skilled world builder. Her FMCs are strong leaders and well developed characters. She delivered once again with her Keepers of a Broken Land series! The only negative is the cliffhanger followed by the wait for the sequel.
I can definitely, absolutely and without question recommend this series. It’s a perfect fantasy adventure!

This book has a cast of strong female characters who are not teenagers/in their early 20s, but women with families who try to protect the ones they love.
I also really liked the magic system, the burying rites of Elihor and the world building.
The cliffhanger at the end makes me wish the second book was available already.

Bilodeau weaves a wonderful story full of action, adventure, and heartwarming characters. I can tell these characters have a rich history, but this book works perfectly as an introduction to the world. Highly recommend!
