About Our Boys: A Practical Guide to Bringing out the Best in Boys

Rate this book
About Our Boys was written in response to numerous requests from parents and youth workers who had read Lucinda Neall's practical book Bringing the Best out in Boys - Communication Strategies for Teachers. About Our Boys looks at what makes boys tick, what motivates and de-motivates them and how to help them navigate the journey to manhood. It is packed with examples of what to do and say to get boys on board, to channel their energy and set boundaries.

Lucinda had never planned to write a book. But when she discovered that boys were having a hard time in school she was moved to find out more about the issue and this resulted in her writing Bringing the Best out in Boys – Communication Strategies for Teachers. It was well received, with this Times Educational Supplement review: “…one of the most interesting accounts available of an over-familiar issue, distinguished by its practical approach. Strongly recommended.” Lucinda used what she had found out to run workshops for teachers and for parents, but soon realised that a further book was needed to help all the other adults that engage with boys. This resulted in her second book, About Our Boys.

Due to her background in communication training, motivation and team building, many of the techniques in the books show how to communicate with boys in a way that engages them. These are techniques that can be adapted to motivate anyone, so she condensed them into the pocket book How to Talk to Teenagers, which gives easily accessible tips on what to say (and not say!) to get the best out of teenagers.

Lucinda has done a lot of voluntary work with young people over the years, and more recently worked with older teenagers who have had troubled lives. Her next project is an illustrated book for teenagers tackling some of the issues they face.
