The black-and-white pictures are for under-6-month-olds. While they cannot sit up straight, it is hard to show the pictures while reading books to babies this age. Babies over 6 months quickly lose interest in the black-and-white pictures and turn to coloured ones. This book is well-written and well-drawn; it features several parent-and-baby bird pairs, e.g., blue wrens, cockatoos, and lorikeets. It'd be so much better if it were coloured and included the animals' names. This book is also one of the two books in the series that feature animals exclusive to Australia. The other book is Aussie Baby Animals: A high-contrast board book.
My son chose this high-contrast board book from the library. Each double spread features a different Australian baby bird and parent (beautifully illustrated in black and white). The words were fun too with lots of onomatopoeia.
this book is a great high contrast option for babies! the words are nothing outstanding but are developmentally appropriate for the target audience. as i read this to my baby, i spoke about the different types of beaks each of the birds had and how this gives us a clue about what they might eat!
