If you are a soup lover, 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐩 𝐜𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐠𝐨𝐥𝐝!
Our days are getting shorter, the nights colder and winter is slowly making its way to the Pacific Northwest. One way we bring a bit of warmth to our belly is a big pot of hearty soup. We don’t entertain lots, but I can imagine how a big bowl of soup would bring people together on a cold day, making it an inexpensive form of entertaining!
You can imagine how excited I was to see that one of my favourite authors has written a companion literary cookbook to as a tribute to her Chateau de Verzat series (that I’ve been spotlighting) and the French Revolution.
𝙎𝙮𝙣𝙤𝙥𝙨𝙞𝙨 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙖𝙪𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙧:
“The characters of Her Own Legacy, Her Own Revolution and Her Own War stunned their author when they demanded she publish their recipes. Happy to comply, Debra Borchert created this cookbook as a companion to her Château de Verzat series.
In addition to healthy and easy-to-make soup recipes, you’ll learn why soup might be the first form of fast food. You’ll be curious about how previously “poisonous” vegetables were encouraged and finally accepted for consumption. Discover how a group of starving orphans, claiming the soup tasted like chamber-pot slops, drove Louis LaGarde to create Uncle Louis’s Lentil Soup.
Debra shares historic soup-making secrets and tips. The proud owner of ten slow cookers—for serving at her annual soup parties—she also includes tips for throwing a Souper Soup Party.”
𝙏𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙩𝙨:
I learned that soups are important to the French cuisine and culture and many of the characters in Borchert’s books cook to express their love. Eighteenth century Paris homes were usually one room, some with a fireplace. For those with no way of cooking, roving vendors took pots of hot soup to the streets to sell. I love it when my mom makes a big pot of soup with the turkey carcass after Thanksgiving and Christmas and shares it with us grown up kids; love in action!
I’ve tried three recipes from this book and would gladly make them again. My favourite is the one shown - 𝐁𝐮𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐮𝐭 𝐒𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐬𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐩. I roasted the butternut squash and garlic to intensify their natural flavours and added a splash of ‘leftover’ Moscato wine. It really elevated the flavours. My husband suggested a sprinkle of blue cheese to garnish would be nice next time.
Borchert’s recipes are concise and mouth-watering with easy-to-find, simple ingredients. She has a manageable amount of recipes complied, all written and tested herself, and they range from think, thick, creamy, chilled, and vegetable-based, to a poultry-based chili. Furthermore, she’s placed them in cultural and historical context. I thought it was a nice touch to include the excerpt from the book that inspired the recipe.
4.5.⭐️ Thank you, partners @bookandwinelovers @debrabirchertauthor and @laVinpress for the gifted paperback in exchange for an honest review.
What a terrific little cookbook! If you're a soup lover, you need this one.
This cookbook briefly explains how soup is perhaps our first fast food. Borchert also offers tips for throwing a soup party. All the recipes included in the book are easy to follow and provide additional notes such as optional ingredients, good for crowds, and easy to freeze.
We tried three recipes: Geneviève’s Easy Lemon Chicken Orzo Soup Madame Francoise’s French Onion Soup Sister Magali’s Velvety Butternut Squash and Pear Soup.
All of the soups were tasty, but the clear winner was the Butternut Squash soup.
Thank you @debraborchertauthor & @KateRockBookTours for my gifted eBook and my spot on the tour. My thoughts are my own.
Debra Borchert’s 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘶 𝘥𝘦 𝘝𝘦𝘳𝘻𝘢𝘵 historical fiction series follows the strong-minded women and 400 families who protect the chateau and vineyard located in the Loire valley. 𝘏𝘦𝘳 𝘖𝘸𝘯 𝘓𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘤𝘺 and 𝘏𝘦𝘳 𝘖𝘸𝘯 𝘙𝘦𝘷𝘰𝘭𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 are the first two novels in this series. The third book, 𝘏𝘦𝘳 𝘖𝘸𝘯 𝘞𝘢𝘳, will be released this summer.

I made 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘝𝘦𝘳𝘻𝘢𝘵 𝘊𝘰𝘰𝘬‘𝘴 𝘗𝘰𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘰-𝘓𝘦𝘦𝘬 𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘱 and it was delicious! I plan to make some of the other soups this week as well. I enjoyed reading the French methods for making the soups in this book, and all of them are very doable!
MY THOUGHTS - I loved this cookbook - there are so many different recipes that would be perfect all year long. I chose to make the Chicken Vegetable Soup Recipe which was a huge hit in my house. The recipes were easy to follow and were so flavorful. The author also puts in excerpts of her books. Thank you to the author, publisher and Book and Wine Lovers Marketing for allowing me to read a copy of this book - all thoughts are my own.
I really enjoyed Soups of Chateau de Verzat by Debra Borchert. It’s a companion cookbook of soups to accompany her Chateau de Verzat series. The recipes are written by characters in the books! All of the recipes sound delicious, are easy to follow, and are made with locally found ingredients. It’s a great little cookbook that I’m going to put to good use this winter! I loved reading the stories that accompany the recipes!
On 01-26-24 I made Genvieves lemon orzo chicken soup from the cookbook! Simple and delicious! Fragrant with fresh lemon juice and chopped parsley! It is made with chicken broth, chopped cooked chicken, orzo, white wine and spinach! So not only tasty but quite healthy!
A sumptuous blend of history, literature, and French culinary art
Soups of Château de Verzat: A Literary Cookbook & Culinary Tribute to the French Revolution is an exquisite creation part historical reflection, part gastronomic journey, and wholly a love letter to French culture. Debra Borchert has achieved something rare: she’s transformed the spirit of 18th-century France into a sensory experience that engages both the mind and palate.
Each recipe in this beautifully crafted book is more than a culinary instruction it’s a story steeped in the drama, elegance, and resilience of the French Revolution. Borchert weaves together her knowledge of history and her storytelling finesse, inviting readers into the kitchens, salons, and secret cellars of a world where food was not only nourishment but also resistance, comfort, and art.
The soups themselves are inspired by the fictional world of her Château de Verzat series, yet each recipe carries a sense of authenticity and reverence for classic French cuisine. Whether it’s a rustic peasant soup redolent of root vegetables and herbs or an aristocratic bisque rich with cream and brandy, every page feels like stepping into a living museum of taste and tradition.
What truly distinguishes this cookbook is its literary elegance it’s written with the same grace and atmosphere as historical fiction, making it equally enjoyable to read by the fire as to cook from in the kitchen. The blend of narrative excerpts, historical context, and culinary artistry transforms the act of cooking into an immersive cultural experience.
Soups of Château de Verzat is not just a cookbook it’s a tribute to endurance, art, and the shared human joy of food. For lovers of history, literature, and French cuisine alike, this is a treasure worth savoring.
What’s your favorite kind of soup?🍜 I am passionately a soup person. I can eat soup all year round and prefer it to almost all other foods. My favorites are kimchi stew, ramen, pho and any hearty soup with lots of yummy things! I was super excited to get Soups of Château de Verzat: A Literary Cookbook & Culinary Tribute to the French Revolution, by Debra Borchert! I’ve never had a French soup, but Alyssa and I will be heading back to Paris this summer, so I plan to try some! In the meantime, I plan on making some of these fun soup recipes! Here’s a little more about this book: “The characters of Her Own Legacy, Her Own Revolution, and Her Own War stunned their author when they demanded she publish their recipes. Soups of Château de Verzat was published on 11/1/23 and is available on our Amazon storefront!🧜🏼♀️🌺
I love this little soup cook book! It was so fun to make an actual recipe from the novel Her Own Revolution that I had read previous. This cookbook has very easy recipes and I love how there is a little entry with each one. I made Geneiève's Easy Lemon Chicken Orzo soup and enjoyed the different flavor. The broth was similar to a chicken noodle soup and I also found a new type of noodle to use in other soups. This would be great for when you are down, in that the noodles are small and very easy to swallow. There are a few more recipes that I would like to try, and love that I can now taste these soups and foods, so when I read about them it will just enriched the story for me. I also enjoyed looking for some of the items in the grocery store, as I had never really taken the time to look at some of the produce items that were so popular in historical times to survive. If you love soups and are always looking for new recipes, I would highly recommend this cookbook. The recipes are so simple to make, nothing too in depth and most of the items I have in my cupboards and the produce and fruit were not expensive at all. Thank you to the author for sending me a complementary cookbook and to Book & Wine Lovers for the tour invite. This review is of my own opinion and accord.
I love making and eating soup. I can eat soup 365 days a year. So when I received this cookbook of soups, I was excited to start making some of these delicious recipes. The first soup I made was the Verzat Cooks Potato Leek soup which was easy to make and so delicious. I crumbled bacon and scallions on top to make it like a loaded baked potato. The second recipe I mad was Etty's Asparagus soup. This soup was also easy to make though the next time I made it I would double the recipe. Each recipe has the ingredients, process and special notes.
There is a recipe for Pupsciles at the back of the book. Debra has also included tips on holding a Soup Party which sounds like the perfect party for a cold winter day. The next recipes I am going to try are the Madame Francoise French Onion Soup and Genevieve's Easy Lemon Chicken Orzo Soup.
Debra created this cookbook as a companion to her Chateau de Verzat series. Mixed between the recipes are excerpts of the three books, Her Own Legacy, Her Own Revolution and Her Own War. Thank you to the author and Book and Wine Livers for the book and this is my honest opinion. If you are a lover of soups, do yourself a favor and pick up this cookbook!
I was so impressed with how easy these recipes were to make. Most of the ingredients I had on hand. Easy-to-follow directions Even I was able to deliver a delicious dinner that was family-approved I tried two of the dishes Uncle Louis's Lentil Soup and Debra's Black Bean, Yam, and Turkey Sausage Chili Both were such a big hit with my family
The attached excerpts after most of the recipes were just an added touch of fun for me to read while I was either prepping or waiting on an ingredient My older daughter tried the Lemon Chicken Orzo for her weekly meal prep and yes you know I snagged myself a bowl I browsed recipes I did not try and only one or two looked like they would take a bit more time or required ingredients that I do not usually stock I highly recommend it. The recipes are easy to follow. The ending results are absolutely delicious Most will easily feed a large family or just one or two and the leftovers can be frozen We use the little silicone soup freeze-things (I can't recall the name lol )
The cover photo of the book is absolutely gorgeous and so is the name. I was intrigued into reading the book due to the recipes and their names. I am a person who loves to try out different kinds of dishes and trust me this book is a whole new level of recipes. It is a culinary tribute to the French Revolution.
Enjoy the flavors and stories of the French Revolution with this cookbook, inspired by Debra’s Chateau de Verzat series. Along with the recipes, you’ll find excerpts from the three books that showcase the adventures of strong women in turbulent times.
My personal favourite is The Creamy Zucchini Soup, a delicious French dish that my mother cooked for me. I was enchanted by its rich and smooth flavour. Zucchini is a healthy fruit that provides both Vitamin B and C. You can enjoy this soup either hot or cold. I highly recommend this literary cookbook for anyone who loves food and literature.
After reading 𝐇𝐞𝐫 𝐎𝐰𝐧 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 and loving it, I knew I wanted to have a peek at Debra Borchert’s soup cookbook and it didn’t disappoint!
I picked the THÉRÈSE AND ANNE’S MUSHROOM SOUP and holy yum! Warming and delightfully umami. I typically love a nice cream of chicken and rice or something really substantial but sometimes I just crave that mushroom flavor and this recipe hit the spot in a healthy way. Instead of cream, it uses milk and greek yogurt so you’re adding some protein in while still getting that creamy feel. I was feeling like something crunchy but didn’t want to add crackers so I sautéed up some shallots and a couple of leftover mushrooms until I got that crunch and it was the perfect addition.
Thanks so much to @bookandwinelovers and the author for the gifted copy!!
I absolutely loved this cookbook. My favorite recipe is Debra’s zucchini soup. This creamy zucchini soup is the best way to use up garden zucchini with no need for a roux to make it nice and thick! You can serve this healthy (zucchini is rich in Vitamins B and C) soup cold or hot. It’s simply delicious and full of flavor. I would definitely recommend this recipe to my friends and family and to those who love homemade soups. “Is there any other kind of soup besides homemade?” Mireille’s words from the book.
A charming and unique cookbook that blends delicious, easy-to-make soup recipes with literary excerpts and French Revolutionary history. Soups of Château de Verzat is warm, creative, and perfect for readers who love food, stories, and simple comfort cooking. Highly recommended.
Soups of Château de Verzat: A Literary Cookbook & Culinary Tribute of the French Revolution by Debra Botchert
I’m so honored that Debra sent me her soup book so I could try one of the recipes!
We tried the wonderful Easy Lemon Chicken Orza Soup and it was delicious. I served it at book club last night and everyone raved! It was super easy too!
I love that Debra creates this cookbook as a companion to her book series, Her Own Legacy and Her Own Revolution.
I simply adored Her Own Revolution so go out to your nearest library or bookstore and check it out.
