Hayes Carrington has spent the last decade carefully constructing walls around her heart so that she won't lose at love again, especially now that she has a child to protect. Jake Banneker has spent the same decade building his construction empire and learning to forgive. His former bad boy persona was well earned, but now he longs for something more. After a twist of fate throws Hayes and Jake back together, sparks fly - and not just steamy ones. Old deceptions and new ones are uncovered, crumbling her belief in the foundations of her world. As she struggles to rebuild her trust, could her first love be the key?
Romance novels aren’t my thing, but a friend offered an opportunity to get a sneak peek at Reconstructing Hayes and I thought, why not? I was pleasantly surprised. Maybe it’s because I’m the mom of three boys so I do get tired of fiction that portrays men as either weak or wicked. The leading man in this novel, Jake Banneker, is neither. In fact, he’s more likeable, at least initially, than the female protagonist, Hayes Carrington. As the book progresses, you do begin to understand why Hayes behaves the way she does…she, too, has been betrayed by people she trusted. Like so many of us, she misinterprets situations that lead to very poor choices. So caught up in the narrative, I started yelling at her. Wake up, girl. What’s wrong with you? All in all, a zippy read that I recommend, especially for those who love this genre.
Hayes and Jake meet again after about ten years after their earlier college relationship ended. They are both at different parts of their lives; they both own their own businesses, but Hayes is a widow with a young daughter. How they venture through their reconnection makes this book an easy, enjoyable read. A story of love, loss, family and relationships. Looking forward to more books with Hayes and Jake, hopefully? Congratulations to Tessa Lyons on a great debut novel! I love reading new authors and following their journeys. Thank you to the author and publisher for this ARC.
I enjoyed the journey that main characters Hayes and Jake take together in part two of their relationship! Hayes is a resilient and independent lady who is lacking true love and companionship after trauma. Jake has been always searching for her and the development of their relationship in the face of work and Family complications kept me turning the pages. I loved the way the author unpacks their undeniable attraction For one another as they explore their second chance at life together.
Loved this book. Characters, especially Hayes and Jake, well developed and relatable. Hayes and Jake have fascinating, yet entirely plausible, careers, backstories, and families. Nothing trite or cookie cutter in this novel. Very enjoyable and engaging read!
