Code of Reanimation: A Father of Contention Spin-off

Rate this book
Freedom is a state of mind.

Brigita Nowak has only ever wanted one thing—her freedom. Labelled psychotic and committed to a mental institution at seventeen, she missed the chance of a “normal” life. She never held a job, owned her own place, or experienced love. Until now.

After awakening sprawled on the common room floor—the hospital in ruins, the staff and patients missing—she realizes it’s her chance to escape. Seeking sanctuary with her sister, she meets “the boyfriend” Renner Scholz, a vile yet brilliant geneticist. He has developed a bioweapon, the Code of Reanimation, destined to destroy the world. Or so Brigita believes. She’s been seeing zombie hallucinations as of late, a sure premonition of the highly contagious bioweapon getting out of hand. Why the connection? Because the bioweapon reanimates dead organisms into bloodthirsty killing machines.

Brigita has typically experienced death-based hallucinations, blamed on her mental illness. She, however, always felt they were psychic premonitions. Convinced that Renner intends to release the bioweapon at a public fundraising event, she teams up with a handsome love interest to thwart the catastrophe. But, as Brigita’s visions kick into hyperdrive and timelines blur, she must determine which events are based on reality or delusional constructs of her subconscious mind...
before it’s too late.

Code of Reanimation: A Father of Contention Spin-Off” is a fast-paced and very good science fiction/horror read that starts out with a huge bang and does not slow down. While the book is a spin-off from Lanie Mores’ The Father of Contention series, it is one that can be a stand-alone story for those out there (like myself) who have not yet read the first story. I appreciated that as, normally, there is little way to understand what is going on if you have not been a part of the beginning.

“Code of Reanimation” tells the story of Brigita Nowak, a young woman who was committed to a mental institution at the age of 17 and considered psychotic by everyone around her. Brigita has never had a normal life…never a job, never a home of her own, never love…until now. She finally gets her chance to escape when she wakes up on the floor of the institution to find the hospital has been destroyed and the staff and the other patients are all gone. Brigita runs quickly and goes to her sister hoping for help, compassion, and a place to stay. When Brigita gets to her sister she meets her sister’s boyfriend, Renner Scholz, a terrifying and very smart scientist who has developed a bioweapon he wants to use to destroy the world. This is a weapon that will bring life back to things that have died and, in so doing, will turn them into “killing” machines.

Brigita has spent her life dealing with hallucinations that are always about death and have been blamed on her mental issues. She, on the other hand, always believed and tried to get others to believe, that she is not crazy, but she is instead having premonitions. As the visions become more prevalent and her fear of Renner and what he is about to do gets stronger, Brigita must join forces with a new love in order to stop what is happening and save the world. I know, it sounds so great, doesn’t it? I do not want to spoil anything by giving more information so let me just say that you should get out there and find this book so you can read it for yourself.

Lanie Mores is an excellent writer which is very evident in these pages. The storyline is one that will keep you completely mesmerized from the first page to the last. Each scene in the book is very well-written and the descriptions are intense. As a reader, you will feel as if you are right there beside Brigita as she goes through everything. All of the characters in the book are well-developed and keep you interested in the story at all times and the dialogue is very well done.

I enjoyed reading “Code of Reanimation” by Lanie Mores and would recommend it to any science fiction fan around whether you have read the first book or not. The plot, while very unsettling, is excellent and will keep you completely mesmerized. I cannot wait to see what this author comes up with for her readers next. I am sure it will be well worth the wait.

Suspenseful, heartbreaking and intense is how I would describe Lane Mores new release Code Of Reanimation. Written as a spin-off to her Father of Contention series, this book is where I have entered the world from and I’ve happily put the whole series down on my TBR pile. I couldn't put this book down! Lanie shows brave storytelling and hooks you from the moment you open to page one. The action scenes are well-written and had my heart racing. Without giving anything away, there were times I didn't know how this story would end. The plot twists keep you guessing and nail-biting all the way through the story. My favourite character has to be Amir, although there are so many intriguing characters. A must read for lovers of psychological thrillers or if you want to be introduced to this genre with a bang!

Whew, this was a RIDE! Unreliable fmc due to psychosis...maybe? This entire read felt like a fever dream. There are zombies. There are mutants. Cyborgs?...But, it works. This one must be read with attention to detail and an open mind. This is NOT your run of the mill zombie apocalypse...

Good characters, decent pacing. Third person POV.
I enjoyed it :)

This was my first scifi-horror read and I didn’t know it would be such an awesome ride! What’s real? What’s a hallucination? There are so many great themes at play, but they never slow the pace. Code of Reanimation would be a great book club or buddy read selection, because there’s so much to discuss!
**note**I read this as a standalone and it works perfectly!

I received an ARC copy of Code of Reanimation by Lanie Mores for an honest review.

Though a spin-off of The Father of Contention Series, Code of Reanimation could be viewed as a stand-alone, sci-fi horror which explores the life of strong-willed Brigita Nowak.

Gifted with an ability of foresight Brigita’s visions tend to reveal nightmarish truths that others deem as psychotic delusions. Diagnosed with catatonic schizophrenia she was confined to the McMillan Psychiatric Hospital at the age of seventeen.

After many years of residency in the mental institution, Brigita wakes to find the hospital in total disarray and all the staff gone. She seeks help from the one person she longs to connect with, her sister Milena.

Skeptical Brigita is telling the truth, Milena is soon forced to let her sister stay after she isn’t able to reach anyone at the hospital.

Even though her mind seems to slip into mild states of delusion, Brigita feels safe with her sister. That is, until Milena mentions her boyfriend, Renner Scholz. Just hearing his name sends Brigita’s abilities into overdrive. There is a darkness to Renner that she can’t shake or unsee. He is a man driven by ambition and a twisted desire to reshape mankind to his liking.

Brigita tries to fight the dark and disturbing images that plague her mind whenever she is near Renner. But when she can not, her warnings to Milena fall on deaf ears, for Milena is under the thrall of this evil geneticist.

Brigita then confides in their neighbor, Amir, someone she barely knows but feels instantly drawn to. It doesn’t take Amir long to fall for her even after learning the fragile nature of her mind. He also shares her reservations about Renner.

You can’t help but feel for Brigita and Amir, or know what is truth and what is hallucination, because the lines between reality and delusion are brilliantly blurred.

Lanie Mores is a very skilled writer with an ability to evince every scene through vivid descriptions and riveting scenarios. When all is revealed at the end you will stand strong beside Brigita, ache for Amir, and cheer for the someone who comes to help them both and by doing so tips the scales in this story of mental and physical survival.

Code of Reanimation is an amazing spinoff to one of my favorite series.

You know you've read a good book when you can't stop thinking about the story or its characters. "Code of Reanimation" by Lanie Mores is one such book that leaves a lasting impression long after the final page.

Brigita Nowak, the protagonist, has spent most of her life confined to a mental institution, labeled psychotic and stripped of her freedom at the tender age of seventeen. Her dreams of a "normal" life—holding a job, owning a home, and experiencing love—seemed forever out of reach. But everything changes when she awakens on the floor of the common room, the hospital in ruins and everyone else mysteriously gone. This is her chance to escape and reclaim her life.

Seeking refuge with her sister, Brigita encounters Renner Scholz, a brilliant yet sinister geneticist and her sister's boyfriend. Renner has developed a terrifying bioweapon, the Code of Reanimation, capable of turning dead organisms into bloodthirsty zombies. Brigita, who has been plagued by zombie hallucinations, believes these visions are psychic premonitions of the chaos Renner's bioweapon will unleash. Convinced that he plans to release it at a public fundraising event, she teams up with a handsome ally to prevent the impending disaster.

Brigita's journey is fraught with tension as her death-based hallucinations blur the lines between reality and delusion. The stakes are high, and the narrative keeps readers on the edge of their seats, wondering whether Brigita's visions are true premonitions or merely the constructs of her troubled mind.

Lanie Mores masterfully weaves a tale of suspense, blending elements of psychological thriller and sci-fi horror. The plot twist is both fascinating and unexpected, adding depth to an already captivating story. I found myself sympathizing with Brigita, often feeling sorry for her plight and rooting for her triumph over the forces that seek to confine her.

"Code of Reanimation" is a gripping read that will keep you hooked from start to finish. With its enthralling plot and well-developed characters, this book is a must-read for fans of speculative fiction and psychological thrillers.

Lanie More’s ability to write with detailed precision, transported me inside every character and scene in this book. My passion for a greater understanding of mental health, had me rooting for Brigita and her plight; edging me deeper to try to discern with her, which moments were illusion or reality in this mind-bending novel. I loved the brilliant complexity of this novel in its second timeline, with concepts involving loss/grief, multiple generations, the paranormal, and real love. A ‘good verses evil’ theme plays out when Renner (a main underlying character in the author’s ‘Father of Contention Series’, cleverly woven in to this spin-off), struggles with his Ego as he tries to gain power in ways that threaten a family at its core, and global disaster overall. This book had me rooting for true love, overcoming, the greater good, and understanding the critical depths every individual and family must go to, to strengthen generations to come. I love the hope that beckons on every page, and how this author flawlessly connects characters from her series in to this engaging spin-off. I was captivated until the end!

Addicting and a very fast read! I have loved Lanie's other books, and this one did not disappoint either. Though I've yet to finish her Father of Contention series (which Code of Reanimation is a spin-off of), Code of Reanimation was thoroughly enjoyable and had a lot of elements that tied back to the series.

Code of Reanimation is a little different than my usual genre (it has some horror elements that aren't usually my jam), but they weren't overly scary or gruesome. Underneath the thriller, this story is about strength, resilience, and holding onto hope when all feels lost. And all with a lovable, empathetic female lead!

The story was INTRIGUING! Just when I thought I knew what was happening, a twist changed everything. Mind-bending stories are my favorite, so this book hit the mark. If you've read Lanie's other books, you'll enjoy seeing the ties to other characters in her world. If you haven't, the interesting sci-fi elements will make you intrigued enough to read her other books for sure!

Lanie is such a skilled writer! I started reading her book and got hooked right away. I am a huge fan of zombie stories, and this story did not disappoint! Her characters were well-rounded, and I particularly liked Brigita. Brigita’s character was so well done that I wish I could see her character again in a future book. Lanie’s ability to show us what Brigita was seeing was scary and brilliant. Mental health issues are always hard to show, but Lanie did great! I also really liked McKinnon, and I cannot wait to read more about her.

I was also not expecting the twist, and now I need to know what happens next! Now, I am on my way to read her other books!

Haunting, creepy to the nth degree, yet wholly mesmerizing.

The characters here were very well done. There are a number interesting characters in here with complex pasts and issues they are dealing with. Characterization is in general very well done and if you love character driven stories you should enjoy some aspects of this.

I love that this takes place in the creepiest of settings, it makes it that much more dark.

Overall the characters were interesting and the setting lent a lot to the overall story.

This story is labeled horror, but don't be mistaken, it is not the kind to give you nightmares. The horror aspect is not the main feature, but the story beneath it, with all it's twist and turns, is what shines the most.

The characters were very distinct and believable. The way they reacted was spot on.

The pacing is fast, but doesn't feel rushed and the overall storyline is just great. It kept me intrigued the entire time I was reading, never a dull moment in this book!

Creepy with Twists

Full of twists, this creepy and unexpected book had some vivid and intense, gross scenes, but I also loved the love story and the fight the main character waged against the medical system, her mental health, and the government. This kept me entertained with surprises and things I never saw coming.

I loved this book!
Brigita wakes from a catatonic state in a place that's somehow both foreign and familiar. Are her dark visions a premonition of what's to come? The evil hidden behind the masks people wear? She's about to find out the true nature of her powers and the circumstances that have brought her here. On the way, she's entangled in a love story that defies time. Lanie Mores skillfully paints a vivid and haunting world of fantasy and conspiracy with unexpected heroes you'll want to follow into future volumes.

Lanie Mores returns with another fascinating tale in her Father of Contention series. This time, the focus is on the sister in law of the evil Renner Scholtz and her battle against what’s real and what isn’t. The plot is compelling, and the characters are well written (Renner and Milena are exactly how I remember them from the original novel). The twist midway through the novel was unexpected, and the story’s focus took quite the turn as new characters were introduced, and others took on new personalities. The antagonists were about as evil as one could imagine, and frankly some of them got off easy. Even though I wasn’t the biggest fan of how it ended, this book is my favorite in the series.
