*Received a copy for an honest review.*

Gwen's life is far from average. She has hazy memories of being abducted by aliens. Unfortunately, her parents did not believe her claims and all but exiled her to a mental institution. Knowing her only chance to regain her freedom is to lie, she pretends to have made it all up for attention. But she knows the truth, and a part of her is not going to let that go.

Kael is all the proof she needs, wrapped up in a nice package. The more time the two of them spend together, the more their feelings grow. Add in his stalker ex, her dysfunctional family, and a pending war between worlds, and you get Star Crossed: Worlds Apart.

As the title suggests, this is the story of two lovers from opposite sides. Rather than a feuding family, we have separate worlds, separate species. These two have an insta attraction that quickly grows into love. As their relationship deepens, we learn more and more about Kael's people. Things really take off from there.

Gwen and Kael were interesting characters. Both of them get dragged into a war that neither of them wants, and neither of them can just walk away from. Gwen seems to value truth, and tries to spread the word about her history. She's not what I would immediately picture as a sort of save-our-world-from-the-invaders leader, but she's not bad. She has her moments.

Kael on the other hand, plays the sort of bad boy, redeeming rebel role. He has a history that has finally caught up to him. But the more he interacts with certain humans, the more he realizes just how much he has changed, and what is truly important to him.

The plot was interesting and flew by quickly. I cannot say most of what I want to say about it because of spoilers, but, so much happens. Not just to these characters, but all around them. I liked getting to know everyone and uncovering their past. Plus, the aliens had some abilities/tech that kept things fun. The ups and downs in the story pulled the reader along until you couldn't help but be caught up in their drama.

There was really only one drawback that I came across in my reading. A certain individual does something after a certain incident that involved anger and tension and spoiler things. No one was hurt physically in the reaction, and I do understand the character's motivation fort it. It fits and is believable for that person, but it really irks me. Like slash some tires, break some glass kind of irk. When you read books, you trade places with characters and live their lives with them. Personally, I'm not sure I could forgive said act, ever. Which really hobbles their relationship in my mind. They kind of build themselves back up, but no where near my hopes for them at the start.

Despite that one issue, I enjoyed the book. I'd be curious to see what else this author has in store in the future.

I want to encourage the author of this book, but am not sure how to phrase things, so forgive me if I don't get it right. I don't think this particular novel was ready for publication. In the future, I'd like to see the author take classes or workshops in writing, as well as join a competent critique group and get an editor who can help her.

This book is primarily about two people who fall in love (we don't know why; they just do), but who are on opposite sides: human and invading alien. We don't know why the aliens have it in for humanity. We don't know why people suddenly believe the heroine when she warns them about the threat. We don't know why… so many, many things. We need believable motivation for these folks, as well as solid world-building and a universe in which people and things progress logically and consistently. (And paragraphs that only contain one point of view.)

Keep writing, Jolene, but make an effort to learn more of your craft before you publish again. Note: I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.
