In the worlds of mass media and scholarship, much attention has been given to the global 'resurgence of religion', with special attention given to developments within the Muslim world. However, most of this attention and research has been given to militant and politically activist movements. The socalled 'fundamentalists' are viewed as central to the resurgence. When scholars speak of the explanatory failure of 'secularization theory', many discuss only Muslim 'fundamentalists', as did, for example, Stark and Berger. There is little recognition that while membership in the militant groups may be in the thousands, there are many millions of Muslims who are not fundamentalists, there are active participants in Sufi tariqas around the world.
