Freeze-Thaw Durability of Concrete

Rate this book
Concrete durability in climates where freezing and thawing occurs is a continuing problem. It is particularly acute for highway and bridge structures, where de-icing salts are used to combat the effects of frost, snow and ice. These salts can cause damage to concrete and accelerate corrosion of reinforcements. This book presents the latest international research on this area, with contributions from North America and Europe which were presented at an international RILEM workshop.

About the author

I co-founded SIMCO Technologies Inc. in 1997, an engineering consulting firm entirely dedicated to concrete durability that offers integrated and leading-edge technologies and solutions for the optimum design and maintenance of concrete infrastructure. From 1993 to 2012, I held a tenured Professor for the Department of Civil Engineering at Laval University. In 2003, I was elected Director of the Research Centre on Concrete Infrastructure (CRIB) and held this position until March 2010. From 2003 to 2012, I held the Canada Research Chair on Predicting Useful Life of Concrete Infrastructure. From 2005 to 2012, I also held the NSERC Industrial Chair on Durable Repair and Optimized Maintenance of Concrete Infrastructure. I am the author and coauthor of over 175 peer-reviewed scientific publications. I am regularly invited by universities, public and private organizations around the world to discuss concrete durability issues or act as an expert consultant on concrete durability design.

As an internationally recognized specialist in concrete durability modeling, I am involved in the design and construction of major concrete construction projects in Canada and abroad. In 2006 and 2007, I co-chaired the Committee of Experts hired by the Public Inquiry Commission on the Partial Collapse of the La Concorde Overpass. Over the past few years, I have been hired as an expert by the Office of Auditor General of Canada (2007) and by the Auditor General Offices of numerous provinces in Canada. I have acted as an expert witness in several construction defect litigations in Canada and United States.
