Aven is a lynx shapeshifter with the social skills of a snapping turtle and the temper of an angry honey badger. She’s the last person anyone looks to for help. Especially when a necromancer comes to the oasis village of Yunaii with one kill the shifters and turn them into an undead army. After her clan leaders choose deep-rooted pacifist traditions over any chance at defending themselves, Aven vows to stop the necromancer before they strike again. She’ll defend her family and best friend, Mist, even if all she’s got is her ‘fight me’ attitude.
Mist is a dragon shifter, who came to Yunaii to hide from the brewing war against the very necromancers threatening Aven’s home. She wanted quiet and safe, but now that Aven is involved, her list of to-do’s convincing the dragons not to cross the arid wastes and leave the other shifters to die, coercing the clan leaders into working together, and keeping the girl she loves from taking on the bad guys with nothing but her claws.
Only united will the shifters of Yunaii stand a chance at surviving the necromancer and their approaching war party. But defying the peace-keeping laws has a price. One worse than a simple reprimand. A warring heart is not welcome amongst Aven’s people. She will have to choose between exile or watching her family join a corpse army of talons and fangs.
This one's quite a hefty book at over 500 pages but has incredibly detailed action sequences, creative world building and creatures, and complex and diverse characters. With Lynx, Griffin and Dragon shapeshifters it keeps things interesting with the different species, strengths and traditions, alongside their hierarchies with pack leaders, matriarchs, and elf guardians. This has a sweet slow burn friends to lovers FF romance that blossoms throughout the story, which is balanced against the action and violence from the conflicts and threats faced from internal dramas and a necromancer and soulless army. Aven, who is already treated as an outcast by her own people must band together with unexpected allies and use her own power to help give everyone the strength to survive the battles they face. Luckily she has her best friend Mist by her side every step of the way. With a ton of strong and sassy female characters, fun and sarcastic banter, unexpected twists and drama this story keeps you intrigued. This book is about defying expectations, being true to yourself, having faith in loved ones, and embracing love.
Read if You Enjoy: ✨️ Immersive World Building ✨️ Epic Fantasy ✨️ Dual POV
I loved this epic fantasy read. This story follows Aven and Mist and their journey to rally unexpected allies against the Soulless necromancers and their undead army. The world-building is rich in the culture and traditions of the many races that inhabit the lands of Sholindrean.
The characters in the story are complex and easy to fall in love with. Aven, an outcast lynx shapeshifter, is strong, loyal, and fierce. She will stop at nothing to defend and protect the ones she loves. Her best friend Mist, a dragon shapeshifter, is the epitome of small but mighty. All the female characters in this story are so sassy, and I loved them so much. That being said, my favourite character was easily Dev.
The sweet FF slow-burn romance that unfolds over the course of the story and the love between Aven and her parents is so heartwarming; the burn worlds and move mountains kind of love. The rest of the high-stakes, fast-paced story is filled with conflict, epic battles, overcoming internal demons, unexpected twists and turns, and a ton of sarcastic and witty banter.
Thank you, Anna, for providing me with an ARC copy of Lecarian's Fang in exchange for an honest review 🩷
If you're looking for your next epic fantasy with shifters (dragon, lynx, and griffin), politics, slow-burn sapphic romance, and dual POV then look no further.
This is a chonky book, but it doesn't feel long at all. I loved how fast-paced it was, there were so many twists and turns that I didn't see coming. Mist and Aven are so cute and are surrounded by an amazing cast of characters who I can't wait to see explored more in other books.
It's filled with tense battles that will leave you on the edge of your seat, with tender moments to help soften the blow.
Aven is such a strong character who fighting to find her place in the world and will stop at nothing to protect those she loves. Mist is such a sweet soul who will also do anything to protect those she loves.
This book is about being one's true self, overcoming division, bringing others together, and having faith in others.
Thank you so much Anna for the arc! I cannot wait to see where these books go!
Coming into this book knowing there was more to come, I was excited to see where it went and McEwan did not disappoint. From the worldbuilding to the character descriptions, this book was wonderfully captivating. I took my time reading this ARC because I wanted to savor it but it was extremely difficult to put down.
Mist and Aven were captivating main characters and I love the dynamic and relationship between them. The subtle differences in the way these two shifters saw the world, their gods, and the other people in their community was very thought out and delivered with such impact that I almost didn't catch the differences at the beginning of the book.
The small twist at the end was somewhat expected by the time I got there but the impact it had was not dulled at all. This book made me cry, laugh, squeal, scream, and so much more. I loved it.
Incredible story telling. Anna McEwan builds an incredibly indepth fantasy world steeped in tradition, culture and beliefs of the many races (Elves, shape shifters, dragons, lynx and more) that live in Yunaii.
Mist and Aven were captivating main characters with a unique voice and culture of their own. Both trying and fit into a world that doesn't quite understand them. I love the slow burn romance that unfolds between Aven & Mist throughout the story. I found myself falling in love with each character McEwan created as they try to set aside their differences and come together to save their world from an army of soulless.
There is so much more to come for this series and I cannot wait to see what Anna McEwan has in store.
I loved the mysteries, the relationships, the complex characters, the sweet Sapphic romance, the in-depth & intricate worldbuilding. The magic systems are subtle & very different from what I've read before. This novel is such a wonderful introduction to a vast world of the author's creation. This is a breath of fresh air. Every detail has meaning. There are so many promises of things to come. I can't wait!
