Contemptible Celibacy: A Pride and Prejudice variation

Rate this book
What if Lady Catherine never reaches Longbourn to bully Elizabeth into giving up any claim on her nephew’s affections, but instead dies suddenly? What if, lacking the encouragement of her refusal to repudiate him, and delayed by events in his return to Hertfordshire after Bingley’s proposal, Darcy and Elizabeth fail to make headway in their own romance? With Caroline Bingley still strangely desperate in her attempts to annex Darcy and the added complication of a helplessly dependent Anne making his time not his own, will Darcy and Elizabeth ever find the way to communicate their changed feelings?

I downgraded this due to the many errors I highlighted and I am sure I missed some. Those errors kept interrupting the flow for me. And I failed discern where the title came in.

The Hunsford proposal has occurred as has Lydia's elopement. Charlotte is married to Collins.

When Lady C. dies, Darcy and the colonel end up taking cousin, Anne, to London as they have learned she is partially deaf. I did like the attention that was given in the story and how sign-language came to the family's attention.

I was not happy initially to read of Richard's developing interest in Caroline Bingley but as we learn about the situation with the Hursts' marriage I was much more understanding of her behaviors and Richard's attraction. This event is parallel to the Darcy (called Liam in the story) and Elizabeth romance.

Bingley and Jane marry early in the story and we hear little of them after that nor do we really hear anything of significance about the rest of the family although we know how Darcy takes care of making sure W. marries Lydia.

Lady Matlock plays a significant role and in the end sponsors 4 young ladies being presented to the queen.

Fascinating plot

As much a story of Caroline Bingley and Anne de Bourgh as it is about Lizzy and Darcy, this tale is very intriguing. Nice romantic moments and well-written dialogue as the Colonel is a hero and we see surprising villainy. Would have given it 5 stars but many typos and missing words which spoils the overall effect of the story for me.

A new take on what made Caroline tick

Interesting plot, good character development and growth, and pretty good dialogue combined to make this an enjoyable and interesting book. It could use a good editor to clean up the extraneous commas and some convoluted sentences.

This was a good story which I enjoyed very much but I found the title an impediment to my enjoyment as I could not let go of it while reading the book.
