Two children make a boy of snow to be their playmate during the winter. They are worried about their father who is gone to fight in the war. They pour all their emotions into this magical snow child, who becomes like a part of their family. But what will they do when spring comes and the snow begins to melt?

I liked this sweet winter story! The plot is very simple, but heartfelt and meaningful. I love the themes of family togetherness and love. I like how the children fight desperately to save their snow friend from melting. And the ending is really lovely and sweet!

However, the writing needs a good editor. The grammar is a little odd in places with funny fragments of sentences. I'm not sure if that was on purpose to create a certain style, or if it was just a mistake.
The writing also seems like it's trying too hard. There are phrases that could have been more straightforward. For instance, instead of just saying that the children didn't have any school that day, the text says, "On this fateful day, the town children were absent from their learning halls." The entire story is wordy and convoluted. It would be a much better book if most of the writing were condensed and simplified. There is also a lot of extra description which slows down the pacing.

The story itself is enchanting, but the writing could use a little help.

In The Snow Child: A Winter Miracle, young siblings James and Clara find themselves in the midst of a snowy diversion as their father is away at war, leaving their hearts heavy with longing. Seeking refuge from their loneliness, the siblings embark on an imaginative journey, fashioning a lifelike snow boy, complete with the most striking blue marble eyes. Within the realms of their young hearts, this ephemeral creation takes on a profound reality, and they devote themselves to nurturing it until the arrival of spring. Little do they anticipate the enchanting and miraculous reunion that awaits them.

This narrative, both heartwarming and emotionally resonant, possesses the potential to enrich the emotional intelligence of young readers. What truly captivates the reader is its ability to beautifully encapsulate the innocence and fortitude inherent in childhood. In the face of adversity and separation, James and Clara's decision to craft a snow child serves as a poignant testament to the solace that can be found in unexpected corners of our lives. The snow child becomes a symbol of their unity, a symbol of hope amidst a world overshadowed by the turmoil of war and an uncertain future. Without delving into the intricacies of the plot, I must emphasize that the manner in which the snow child finds his way back into the lives of James and Clara is nothing short of enchanting and heartwarming.

With a vocabulary that includes terms like "sentinel" and "semblance," this narrative transcends the realm of early readers. Its prose and writing style, I think, are most suitable for readers aged 9 or 10 and beyond. Moreover, the story unfolds beautifully when shared aloud, making it an ideal choice for storytelling sessions or bedtime tales. The Snow Child: A Winter Miracle stands as a humble yet captivating fairy tale set against the backdrop of a very real and challenging historical period. It is a concise, endearing, and meticulously crafted tale that resonates with readers of all ages.

The Snow Child: A Winter Miracle is not only a captivating narrative but also a visual delight, thanks to its beautiful illustrations. The serene setting and heartwarming storyline make it a delightful read for both children and parents. Winter, initially a playful snowman, evolves into a character with lifelike qualities, a transformation that's both enchanting and thoughtfully executed. The book's illustrations are a true highlight, adding depth and vibrancy to the story. They beautifully complement the narrative, bringing the magical world of Winter to life. The way the illustrations play with light and shadow, color and perspective, really enhances the overall reading experience. Author Hannah Rivers has done a remarkable job of blurring the lines between fantasy and reality, capturing the reader's imagination in a way that feels both magical and grounded. Winter's role extends beyond mere playfulness, symbolizing the children's resilience in the face of their father's absence. This adds a layer of depth to the story that is both moving and meaningful. The adventures of Clara and James are filled with whimsy, yet the story remains anchored in a relatable emotional journey. The book is more than a tale about a magical snowman; it's a journey through the enchantments of winter, a celebration of childhood innocence, and a thoughtful reflection on life's fleeting moments. It's a book that captivates young readers and resonates with adults, making it an ideal choice for family storytime. The combination of a compelling narrative and stunning illustrations makes this book a memorable read for me.

This book evokes fond memories of a childhood favorite, Moon Babies, with its classic and heartwarming illustrations. The Snow Child: A Winter Miracle features artwork that is rich and three-dimensional, perfectly capturing the essence of winter with its shades and tints. The Snow Child is depicted with human-like qualities that are particularly striking. As a child, I would have cherished this book, especially on a snowy day. It's a must-have for libraries' storytime collections in January, perfectly suited for public and elementary school settings. The book's charm and magic remind me of what I might have found in the children's section of Waldenbooks. It has an innocence that fills me with nostalgia. The father's role in comforting his children after their loss is touching and serves as a reminder that life moves forward. This is a story my nephew and his younger siblings would have adored. With Christmas around the corner, I can imagine it bringing joy and excitement to children's eyes. If The Snow Child were adapted into various media forms, I believe it could become a timeless classic enjoyed by all ages. It would fit beautifully in DVDs, movie theaters, streaming services, and TV networks, especially during the winter months. This story showcases the power of a child's imagination in a delightful way. The book's descriptiveness adds a wealth of detail to every page. I can see its adaptation being successful both as an animated feature and a live-action film. Fans of imaginative and heartwarming children's literature will find this book utterly enchanting.

A wonderfully nostalgic story. This wintry tale was full of imagination and filled me with all the magical memories of Winter as a child. The Snow Child, set in an idyllic New England town, cast visions of the Currier and Ives paintings and images that were floating around during the holidays when I was younger.

It was the dead of winter, as two siblings and their mother waited for the father to return from war. Perhaps the longing for his return heightened the senses of the brother and sister and lent to their wonderful imaginations. James and Clara, being blessed with one of many snow days, formed a perfectly delightful snowman that would become as real to them as a school friend. They named him Winter and he was such a magical friend. They knew deep down he wasn’t a real boy, but perhaps they needed to fill that void of their father being gone. As the season began to change, so did the snow friend Winter. The Children exhausted ideas to keep him alive, but he was slowly losing form. During this time the father returned home. He reminded the siblings that each season came with its own adventures and they should cherish the memories instead of mourn the endings. To their great surprise, something much better awaited them!

I absolutely enjoyed reading this book. It is mainly a book for youngsters, but as I’ve said, there is quite a bit of nostalgia within the pages. I’m hoping for more from this author. It was such a wonderful read.

Great story about perseverance, hope, and family

In The Snow Child: A Winter Miracle by Hannah Rivers, young siblings Clara and James find magic and adventure during their father's absence at war. In a snowy wonderland, they build a snowman who magically comes to life, becoming a dear friend and partner in their escapades. Their mother's supportive attitude towards this whimsical friend enhances the family bond during a challenging time.

The story beautifully portrays the strength of togetherness and perseverance through difficulties, highlighting the bond of camaraderie, even with the most unexpected friends. As the plot progresses, Clara and James start questioning the reality of their magical companion, adding a layer of depth to the narrative. The father's return home weaves a touching conclusion to this family-centric tale. I was particularly moved by the various messages interlaced throughout the book. Rivers' nod to the idea of the universe aiding the children in bringing their snowman to life resonated with me, as it reflects the concept of manifestation. The book is rich with themes of hope, making it an uplifting read. The beautiful illustrations are a standout feature, vividly bringing the story to life, particularly the enchanting depiction of the Snow Child with deep blue eyes. The Snow Child is an ideal winter read, perfect for those who enjoy heartwarming tales of imagination, hope, and family unity.

Hannah Rivers has written a wonderful and uplifting story that transcends age barriers, captivating readers of all ages with its charm and warmth in The Snow Child: A Winter Miracle. Rivers crafts a moving tale about two siblings maintaining their innocence and imagination while their father is away at war. The story skillfully focuses on the children's lives, filled with joy and creativity, rather than dwelling on the war. This narrative choice is both heartwarming and poignant, highlighting the resilience of childhood even in challenging times. The contrast between the children's cheerful day-to-day activities and the distant backdrop of war is striking. Rivers emphasizes the children's happiness and the strong bond of love and support they share with each other and their mother, which I found deeply touching. The story's core message—that children can retain their sense of wonder and playfulness even in the midst of turmoil—is both inspiring and refreshing. The beautiful illustrations bring the characters to life and immerse the reader into this winter tale.

I highly recommend The Snow Child: A Winter Miracle to anyone seeking a story brimming with hope, joy, and a touch of emotional depth. It's a book that offers a comforting burst of positivity, likely to bring a smile to your face and perhaps a tear to your eye.

This book is a true gem, a masterful blend of magic and reality that left a lasting impression on me. Its narrative, set in a snow-kissed 1940s town, elegantly weaves together the lives of Clara, James, and their magical snow friend, Winter. The storytelling is exceptional, capturing the essence of childhood wonder while delving into the deeper themes of joy, change, and the bittersweet nature of life.

The characters are brilliantly created, each bringing a unique depth and complexity that adds to the overall magic of the story. Their journeys, filled with both uplifting and sentimental moments, are beautifully narrated, making the reader feel deeply connected to their experiences. Rivers' writing style, with its echoes of classic literary charm, adds a layer of nostalgia and reflection that enhances the overall experience.

Despite its undercurrent of melancholy, the book is a captivating read. It strikes a perfect balance between the light-heartedness of childhood fantasies and the sobering realities of life. Concise yet rich in substance, it's an ideal choice for anyone who cherishes winter's mystique or appreciates a narrative that's both emotionally engaging and thought-provoking. This is the perfect holiday read to share with your little ones.

The central characters, Clara and James, are vividly portrayed, bringing their creation, Winter, to life with a sense of wonder and innocence that is both refreshing and engaging. The plot, which gracefully navigates the intricacies of childhood, family dynamics, and the transient nature of time, resonated with me deeply.

The story's structure is a nod to traditional children's literature but stands out through its magical elements, offering a fresh and captivating narrative. Rivers' approach to character introduction is notably effective. Winter, as a character, resonates particularly well with readers, but the other characters also contribute significantly to the story, each in their own unique way. Rivers' writing possesses a kind of enchantment, transforming what initially seems to be a simple tale about children's adventures into a deeper exploration of the wonders of childhood. Clara and her brother James live with their mother in a modest house. Their father is at war and that makes them miss him every day he is away. To spend the time, they use their imagination.
One day in winter when it snows a lot, the two siblings decide to make a snow child. As they make balls of snow that turn into the shape of a little boy and once they put him some eyes, the snow child starts to feel like a real boy.
This is a delightful story that I feel as if sometime before today, I have read something similar, but I don’t remember when or if it is just my imagination.
I loved this sentence: “Life is full of hellos and goodbyes. We should celebrate the moments, not mourn the endings. Let’s remember Winter for the happiness he gave, not the sorrow of his departure.” A very wise sentence, but difficult to follow.

I was whisked away into a world brimming with magic and whimsy. Author Hannah Rivers has created charming characters that bring to life their own snow creation, named Winter. The beautifull illustrated pages are filled with a sense of wonder and joy. While the narrative's heartwarming and moving essence is captivating, I found myself wishing for a slower journey through its seasonal transitions to forge deeper emotional ties with the characters.

Rivers' exploration of memory, family, and life's cyclical nature is nothing short of uplifting. Her writing paints a winter landscape so vivid it almost leaps off the page. Despite feeling a tad rushed at times, the story's magic is undeniable. It left me reflecting on the profound lessons embedded in life's dance with nature. This book is a heartwarming reminder of the magic that exists in the world, making it a must-read for anyone looking to be swept away into a winter wonderland of storytelling.

This was a charming short story. It was very wintry, and magical. Though it didn't take me very long at all to read it, this delightful little story came to life in my mind while I was reading. It wasn't elaborate or clever, just a simple heartwarming story. I think I would like to read a full length novel by this author.

A really cute story of two children during war time. Their dad has gone to serve in the war and they are missing him terribly. It begins to snow and they began to build a snow baby. With lots of imagination they begin to think of the snow baby as a friend.
