Her loyalties torn, Meera finds herself caught in the middle—the middle of the end.
Meera has freed herself from her dungeon cell, but she has not quite freed herself from her grief and guilt. Desperate for atonement, she leads Kennick, Shael, and Linus to Harringbay to seek forgiveness from the duke’s family for her part in his death.
The duke’s daughter, Emmaline, is sick—plagued by a lifetime illness that she fears will kill her. Emmaline requests Meera’s assistance in reaching her ancestral land for a cure, and together, they will embark on a journey—one that will prove fruitful in unexpected ways.
At the same time, a battle is brewing between Aegorn and Terratelle—one final battle to end the long-waging war between the two nations. Meera will have to decide whether or not she will fight … But whatever she decides, her extraordinary abilities won’t help her prevent the death of someone she loves.
Melanie is an escapist reader and writer living in the beautiful White Mountains of New Hampshire. Her two true passions are parenting and writing—both of which require stamina and creativity, but only one of which allows her to sit down. Despite Melanie’s overpriced English degree from an overrated university, she attributes her debut work, The Raek Riders Series, to the isolation of new motherhood—after all, what could make a person crave adventure and romance more than dirty diapers?
Well.. March 19th came, and I read these books as if they were 1, all done by the 23rd. I did not read them as separate books, I couldn't. I finished one and IMMEDIATELY started the next.
Suffice to say, this series is a 5* series for me.
There were parts where some of the social context felt a bit forced to me, as a way for the author to sell a perspective, but not in a bad way. It was well handled and beautiful.. really using our FMC to show it's not "normal" for her. So you can experience the beauty of "those" ways of life with her (LGBTQ2S+, peace, not war, etc). Overall, well done.. I guess I just can't wait for the day when that can be written without needing to draw attention to how "different" or uncommon it is from the heterosexual norms (i.e., it just is normalized) - one day!
To the main storyline, great character development! Our FMC struggles with realizing she isn't as level-headed as she thought. She may be a warrior at Heart, but in her mind, the fight/flight/freeze response maybe doesn't default to fight for her in all situations. She learns to look inward and resolve it. She also learns how looking inward exclusively may hurt the people we love and that she may be her own unreliable narrator.
We get introduced to many more characters, who I was immediately in love with and glad to see some of them step onto the page without pushing any others away.
TL;DR: If you love talking dragons, hero's journey where they are NOT the reluctant hero, a good romance with some spice, and some humor mixed into your anxious plot - give this series a read!
I rarely buy books anymore. My Kindle Unlimited subscription keeps me busy enough. But this series really caught my imagination, and I forked over $12 for it without reservation. I'd like to give you an eloquent synopsis, but time runs away from me. So, I will just say...BUY IT. Oh my word! it has all the feels, delicious character development, an incredible cast of players, and the world-building is awesome. I give it the almost unheard-of 10 /10 unicorns. 🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄
